Sedona AZ (December 9, 2015) – Superintendent of Public Instruction Diane Douglas today released the following statement regarding Congress’ passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which will replace the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.
“Now that the Every Student Succeeds Act has been passed by both houses of Congress, my staff at the Arizona Department of Education has started working to review the bill’s language, which is over 1,000 pages long. The legislation will impact a large number of our programs, so a careful and deliberate review is necessary to determine the possible implications of its implementation over the next several years.
“I am hopeful that ESSA will ultimately deliver increased control of our education system to the state of Arizona and our local schools and districts. That idea goes hand in hand with my vision of deregulation to ease the bureaucratic and administrative burdens that are strangling Arizona’s schools and diverting their resources.
“My hope is that the increased flexibility being discussed as an important aspect of the bill becomes a reality when ESSA is put into practice by the federal government. I look forward to working with stakeholders at all levels to see that its enacted policies are in the best interest of Arizona children.”

Every student needs science, math, reading skills act should be the state goal. Feds caused every state to lose ground. Not one state has a better education system since Bush’s liberal policy did local education in. Don’t whine that Bush was a Republican and that automatically he was conservative, you don’t know politics, you’re a dumb/dumber D&R voter. Bush was an education liberal & took education from the states and put it in to Federal government like his brother Jeb Bush is a liberal on education & immigration. Fact.
