Overnight Work Closes Arizona Interstate 17 *UPDATE

The Arizona Department of Transportation will begin work to repave nine miles of Interstate 17 between Middle Verde Road in Camp Verde and State Route 179 (Sedona turnoff) on Sunday evening, July 1.

The $4.2 million project on I-17 (mileposts 290-299) will include the removal of a layer of the existing pavement, repaving the roadway, guardrail replacement and bridge repair.

Work next week will be limited to guardrail replacement on northbound I-17 and a pavement test strip at the southbound McGuireville rest area. No work will take place on the Fourth of July holiday.

Drivers can expect the following overnight restrictions next week:

There will be moving right lane closures on northbound I-17 from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Sunday, Monday, July 2 and Thursday, July 5 for guardrail replacement

The southbound McGuireville rest area will be closed from 8 p.m. Thursday, July 5 to 8 a.m. the following morning

The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of September.

The work zone will be clearly marked by temporary barricades and signage. ADOT advises drivers to allow additional time to reach their destinations and to proceed through the work zone with caution, comply with the reduced speed limit, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

Prior Update June 15, 2012:  Traffic on southbound Arizona Interstate 17 at Cordes Junction will be shifted onto the new northbound Big Bug Creek bridge next week, while northbound traffic will be rerouted through a bridge construction work zone, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. 

The traffic shifts will require lane restrictions in both directions and periodic full closures of I-17 up to 30 minutes between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. during Wednesday and Thursday nights.

The following restrictions and closures will be in place:

Monday (June 18, 2012) through Thursday (June 21, 2012) from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. – northbound and southbound left lane closures to allow crews to move large amounts of dirt safely from the median, place concrete barriers, and restripe the roadway.

Wednesday (June 20, 2012) from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. – intermittent southbound lane closures and full closures up to 30 minutes from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. to allow crews to switch traffic onto the new Big Bug Creek bridge.

Thursday (June 21, 2012) from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. – intermittent northbound lane closures and full closures up to 30 minutes from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. to allow crews to shift traffic through a bridge work zone.

ADOT advises drivers to adjust travel schedules in order to avoid the closures or allow extra travel time to reach destinations. The work is part of a $50 million project to reconstruct the I-17/State Route 69 traffic interchange.

The work zone will be clearly marked by temporary barricades and signage.

ADOT advises drivers to allow additional time, proceed through the work zone with caution, comply with the reduced speed limit, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

  1. Crews will shift northbound and southbound traffic through a work zone on Interstate 17 at Cordes Junction beginning June 25, 2012 and Interstate 17 south of Flagstaff, Arizona in the Munds Park area.

    The following restrictions and closures will be in place next week:

    ● Monday (June 25) from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. – Intermittent northbound I-17 closures up to 30 minutes will allow crews to shift traffic through the bridge work zone.
    ● Monday (June 25) from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. – Alternating lane restrictions will be in place on northbound I-17 to allow crews to move traffic through the bridge work zone
    ● Tuesday through Thursday (June 26-28) from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. – Left lane restrictions will be in place in both directions of I-17 to allow for median work.

    Pinewood Boulevard in Munds Park closed June 27-28 for bridge work – Detour 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day

    Girders will be installed on the new southbound Interstate 17 bridge at Munds Park Wednesday, June 27 and Thursday, June 28, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. Pinewood Boulevard, which crosses beneath I-17, will be closed each day from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. to provide a safe work zone.

    Motorists who wish to access the west side of Pinewood Blvd. from the east side of I-17 will have to take I-17 two miles north to Willard Springs Boulevard, exit and re-enter the highway heading south to Pinewood Blvd. Motorists who wish to access the east side of Pinewood Boulevard from the west side of I-17 will have to take I-17 three miles south to Schnebly Hills Rd., exit and re-enter the highway heading north to Pinewood Boulevard.     The work is part of a $10 million project to reconstruct the I-17 Munds Park traffic interchange. The project is scheduled for completion this fall.

    The speed limit is reduced through the work zone. Drivers are reminded to slow down, proceed through the work zone with caution, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

  4. UPDATE: Pavement marker installation scheduled on northbound I-17 north of Sedona turnoff next week – Drivers advised to allow extra travel time between Phoenix and Flagstaff.

    The final work to repave a six-mile segment of northbound Interstate 17 just north of State Route 179 (Sedona turnoff) will require lane restrictions from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 16 through Thursday, July 19, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

    This work was scheduled to be completed today, but the work has been extended due to equipment breakdown.

    The $5 million pavement improvement project began last year and will be finished next week after crews complete of the installation of reflective pavement markers. Crews previously completed repaving the roadway from the Stoneman Lake traffic interchange to the Coconino County line (mileposts 306-312).

  5. Paving and guardrail work on southbound Interstate 17 from State Route 179 to Camp Verde continues next week – Work scheduled overnight Monday through Friday.

    Paving and guardrail replacement will continue overnight next week on southbound Interstate 17 between State Route 179 (Sedona turnoff) and Middle Verde Road in Camp Verde, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

    Work hours are 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Monday, July 16 through Friday, July 20.

    Median work scheduled on Interstate 17 at Cordes Junction next week – Overnight lane restrictions in both directions during work hours.

    Traffic on Interstate 17 at Cordes Junction will be narrowed to one lane in each direction during nighttime work hours next week, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

    The lane restrictions will provide a safe work zone as crews remove large amounts of dirt in the median from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday, July 16 through Thursday, July 19.

    The work is part of a $50 million project to reconstruct the I-17/State Route 69 traffic interchange, which is scheduled for completion in summer 2013.

    Minimal delays are expected and drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time to reach their destinations.

    Sunday, July 22: The interstate will be narrowed to one lane in both directions between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. as crews remove dirt from the median and pave a detour.

    Monday through Wednesday, July 23-25: The interstate will be narrowed to one lane in both directions between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. as crews remove dirt from the median and pave a detour.

    Thursday night, July 26: The highway will be closed intermittently in both directions for up to 30 minutes at a time between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. as crews perform work on the bridge over I-17.

    Thursday, July 26: The southbound I-17 off-ramp to State Route 69 will be closed from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. to allow crews to continue bridge work over I-17. Traffic will be detoured three miles southbound on I-17 to Bloody Basin Road (Exit 259) and then directed to turn around and use northbound I-17 to reach the SR 69 exit.

    Thursday, July 26: Drivers on southbound I-17 through the bridge work zone will be shifted onto a northbound lane and then back onto the southbound lanes. The traffic switch will occur from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. to provide a safe work zone for crews as they continue work on the bridge above I-17.

    Drivers are encouraged to adjust their travel schedules in order to avoid the closures during those hours or allow extra travel time.

    The work is part of a $50 million project to reconstruct the I-17/SR 69 traffic interchange. The work zone will be clearly marked by temporary barricades and signage. ADOT advises drivers to allow additional time to reach their destinations and to proceed through the work zone with caution, comply with the reduced speed limit, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

  8. Blasting scheduled at Cordes Junction late Monday night – Intermittent closures up to 30 minutes between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m.

    Crews will conduct blasting operations overnight Monday, July 30 on Interstate 17 at Big Bug Creek just south of Cordes Junction, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

    The highway will be closed intermittently for up to 30 minutes between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. to provide a safe work zone.

    The following closures and restrictions will also be in place as crews remove excess dirt from the median:

    ● Monday, July 30: The interstate will be narrowed to one lane in both directions overnight between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

    ● Tuesday through Thursday, July 31 to Aug. 2: The interstate will be narrowed to one lane in both directions overnight between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m.

    Drivers are encouraged to adjust their travel schedules in order to avoid the closures during those hours or allow extra travel time.

  10. Lane closure tomorrow on northbound Interstate 17 north of Sunset Point –
    ADOT crews clearing debris

    The left lane on northbound Interstate 17 just north of the Sunset Point Rest Area (milepost 253 to 256) will be closed tomorrow, Wednesday, August 1 from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. as ADOT crews remove debris in the roadway due to heavy rain received over the weekend.

    The speed limit will be reduced to 55 mph and brief delays are expected.

    ADOT advises drivers to proceed through the work zones with caution, slow down, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

  11. Paving on Interstate 17 near Camp Verde requires closure of ramps at McGuireville traffic interchange tonight – Northbound on and off ramps closed from 7 p.m. tonight until 10 a.m. tomorrow.

    The northbound ramps at the McGuireville traffic interchange on Interstate 17 (milepost 293) will be closed for paving from 7 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 1) through 10 a.m. Thursday (Aug. 2) according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. The work is part of a $4.2 million project to repave I-17 between Middle Verde Road in Camp Verde and State Route 179 (Sedona turnoff).

    Drivers headed to McGuireville on northbound I-17 will be directed six miles north to SR 179, where they can turn around and return to McGuireville. Drivers in McGuireville who want to go north on I-17 will be directed four miles south to Middle Verde Road, where they can turn around and head north.

    Crews will continue overnight paving and guardrail replacement next week on northbound Interstate 17 between State Route 179 (Sedona turnoff) and Middle Verde Road in Camp Verde , according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. The work will require alternating lane restrictions daily on northbound I-17 from 7 p.m. to noon Sunday, August 5 through Friday, August 10.

    Drivers can expect alternating lane restrictions from 9 p.m. Monday to noon Tuesday on I-17 in both directions as crews perform work on vehicle counters in the roadway.

    Minimal delays are expected and drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time to reach their destinations.

    The northbound off-ramp at the McGuireville rest area on Interstate 17 (milepost 297) will be closed for paving on the following days, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

    ● 7 p.m. Thursday, August 9 to noon Friday, August 10

    The following late night closures and restrictions will be in place on Interstate 17 at Cordes Junction (milepost 262) next week as crews work on new bridges over the highway, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation:

    ● Monday through Wednesday, Aug. 13-15 from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., drivers on northbound I-17 will be shifted onto the off and on ramps at the Arcosanti bridge (new bridge north of existing Cordes Junction bridge).

    ● Thursday, Aug. 16 from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., I-17 will be closed intermittently up to 15 minutes at a time. Northbound traffic will also be shifted to the southbound lanes through the work zone.

    ● Thursday, Aug. 16 from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., the on-ramp from State Route 69 to northbound I-17 will be closed. Traffic will be detoured three miles south on I-17 to Bloody Basin Road (Exit 259) and then directed to turn around to northbound I-17.

  16. Lane closure scheduled next week on northbound Interstate 17 north of New River – ADOT crews cleaning debris from behind barrier wall after last week’s heavy rains.

    Northbound Interstate 17 just north of New River (mileposts 234-235) will be narrowed to one lane from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 13 through Thursday, Aug. 16, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

    The lane closure will provide a safe work zone for ADOT crews as they remove debris that accumulated behind a barrier wall adjacent to a slope on the left side of the highway after heavy rains last week. The speed limit will be reduced to 55 mph and brief delays are expected.

    ADOT advises drivers to proceed through the work zones with caution, slow down, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

  17. Paving continues on Interstate 17 from Camp Verde to State Route 179 next week – Overnight closure of on and off ramps at SR 179 scheduled :

    Crews will continue paving and guardrail replacement next week on Interstate 17 between State Route 179 (Sedona turnoff) and Middle Verde Road in Camp Verde (mileposts 290-299), according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. Be prepared for delays.

    Drivers can expect the following impacts next week:

    Alternating lane restrictions in both directions on I-17 from 7 p.m. to noon Sunday, Aug. 12 through Friday, Aug. 17.
    The northbound off-ramp from I-17 to State Route 179 will be closed from 11 p.m. Monday, Aug. 13 to noon Tuesday, Aug. 14 and from 7 p.m. Tuesday to noon Wednesday, Aug. 15. Drivers headed to Sedona can take State Route 260 at Camp Verde to State Route 89A through Cottonwood.
    The northbound on-ramp from State Route 179 to I-17 will be closed from 7 p.m. Wednesday to noon Thursday, Aug. 16. Drivers headed to Flagstaff from Sedona can take southbound I-17 approximately five miles to the McGuireville traffic interchange (milepost 293) to turn around and go northbound on I-17.

  18. Paving and guardrail work on Interstate 17 from State Route 179 to Camp Verde continues next week – Lane restrictions 8/19-8/24.

    Crews will continue paving and guardrail replacement next week on Interstate 17 between Middle Verde Road in Camp Verde and State Route 179 (Sedona turnoff), according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

    Drivers can expect alternating lane restrictions in both directions, from 7 p.m. to noon, Sunday, Aug. 19 through Friday, Aug. 24.

    In addition to the paving work on I-17, crews will be installing vehicle counters on southbound I-17 from 7 p.m. to noon Monday, Aug. 20 through Wednesday, Aug. 22. The vehicle counters will assist ADOT in keeping accurate traffic counts on the interstate.

    Lane closure scheduled next week on southbound Interstate 17 south of Camp Verde Right lane closed as ADOT crews remove debris from shoulder – Southbound Interstate 17 just south of Camp Verde (mileposts 281-285) will be narrowed to one lane from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20 through Thursday, Aug. 23, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

    The closure of the right lane will provide a safe work zone for ADOT crews as they remove debris that has accumulated on the shoulder. The lane closure will be in one-half mile segments at a time. Minimal delays are expected.

  19. Overnight bridge work on Interstate 17 at Cordes Junction next week – Southbound lanes closed at Arcosanti bridge Monday through Thursday nights.

    The following late night closures and restrictions will be in place on Interstate 17 at Cordes Junction next week as crews work on new bridges over the highway, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation:

    •Monday through Thursday, Aug. 20-23 from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., the southbound lanes of I-17 will be closed at the Arcosanti bridge (new bridge north of existing Cordes Junction bridge). Southbound traffic will be shifted to the new off and on ramps at the bridge.
    •Monday, Aug. 20 from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. drivers on northbound I-17 can expect alternating lane restrictions to allow crews to perform temporary striping and relocate concrete barriers.

  20. Reconstruction of Interstate 17 traffic interchange at Munds Park continues – Bridges complete. Traffic still to be detoured.

    The Arizona Department of Transportation has completed reconstruction of the bridges on Interstate 17 at Munds Park, approximately 20 miles south of Flagstaff.

    The $10 million project includes reconstructing the southbound and northbound I-17 bridges and ramps, as well as the realignment of Pinewood Boulevard. The first phase of this project, which included the reconstruction of the northbound I-17 bridge and ramps, was completed last year.

    Beginning Wednesday (Aug. 22), crews will repave the northbound and southbound on and off ramps.

    The ramps will remain open, but traffic will be shifted onto temporary ramps.

    Traffic is scheduled to be switched onto the final ramp alignments by the end of August.

    Work hours are 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

    Pinewood Boulevard will be paved under I-17 beginning Tuesday (Aug. 28). Pinewood Boulevard will remain open and traffic is scheduled to be put onto the new alignment by mid-November.

    Southbound I-17 traffic is currently being detoured to northbound I-17.

    This detour will remain in place until mid-September, when the southbound lanes are paved and traffic is rerouted back to the southbound lanes. After the shift, traffic will be restricted to one lane while crews remove the temporary traffic crossovers, work on guardrail, and complete other project elements.

    Crews will return in the summer of 2013 to apply the top layer of asphalt pavement.

    The speed limit is reduced throughout the construction zone and drivers are reminded to slow down, proceed through the work zone with caution, and be alert for construction equipment and crews.

  21. Paving and guardrail work on Interstate 17 from Camp Verde to State Route 179 wraps up next week – Lane restrictions and detours during work hours.

    The Arizona Department of Transportation is in the final stages of a $4.2 million project to repave a nine-mile stretch of Interstate 17 between Middle Verde Road in Camp Verde and State Route 179 (Sedona turnoff).

    Crews are scheduled to complete repaving and guardrail replacement on I-17 between mileposts 290-299 next week.

    Drivers can expect the following impacts next week:

    ● Monday, Aug. 27 through Wednesday. Aug. 29: alternating lane restrictions in both directions from 7 p.m. to noon the following day for paving, guardrail replacement, and shoulder work throughout the project.

    ● Tuesday, Aug. 28: the northbound McGuireville rest area (milepost 297) will be closed from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. to complete paving the ramps.

    ● Wednesday, Aug. 29: the northbound off and on ramps at SR 179 will be closed between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. to allow crews to complete paving the ramps. Northbound drivers on I-17 headed to Sedona will need to continue eight miles north to the Stoneman Lake exit, turn around, and go south to the Sedona turnoff. Drivers headed to Flagstaff from Sedona will need to go five miles south to the McGuireville traffic interchange, turn around, and head north on I-17.

    ● Thursday, Aug. 30: the southbound off and on ramps at SR 179 and the southbound McGuireville rest area will be closed between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. to allow crews to complete paving the ramps. Southbound drivers on I-17 headed toward Sedona will need to continue five miles south to the McGuireville traffic interchange, turn around, and head north on I-17 to the off ramp at SR 179. Drivers heading south on I-17 from SR 179 will need to go north eight miles to the Stoneman Lake exit, turn around, and head south on I-17.

    ADOT advises drivers to allow extra travel time to reach their destinations. The detours will be clearly marked by temporary barricades and signage.

    The improvement project includes the removal of a layer of the existing pavement, repaving the roadway, guardrail replacement and bridge repair. The project, which began on July 1, is scheduled to be completed before the end of September.
