Sedona AZ (December 14, 2015) – The City of Sedona, Arizona, is hosting an open house to review the proposal for a new city park on Friday, December 18, 2015, from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the old Sedona Ranger Station, 250 Brewer Road, Sedona. The city acquired the 3.5 acre station property in 2014 and is now developing a master plan of proposed improvements.

The open house will provide an opportunity for the community to review and comment on the proposal for the new park, such as proposed improvements and use of the buildings. This is also an opportunity to tour its two Historic Landmark buildings. Stop by anytime during the open house to see the proposal and enjoy a hot beverage (dress warmly).

The draft proposal for the new park is based goals to honor its history, build a sense of community, and create an area for community interactions, which are a reflection of the public input and the Sedona Community Plan. The two historic buildings are proposed to be used as multiple purpose community rental space with an open plaza between the two buildings. Also proposed are a large open lawn, a walking path, picnic tables, artwork, pickle ball court, and play features including swings for both kids and adults.

The old Ranger Station property is behind Los Abrigados and Tlaquepaque and is the former site of the Coconino National Forest-Red Rock Ranger District offices. Two of the buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places and are city Historic Landmarks. The original Ranger Station residence was built in 1917 and is the oldest known building in the city. The barn was built in 1934 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The two buildings will be preserved as the centerpiece of the park and the future use of the buildings will be addressed during this planning process.

If you cannot make the open house, you may review the proposal and submit your comments online at www.SedonaAZ.gov/rangerstation or contact Senior Planner Cynthia Lovely at 203-5035 or email clovely@SedonaAZ.gov.

  1. Here we go again – fabulous planning. Could there possibly be a worse time to hold this Open House? And in one of Sedona’s already most congested areas during one of the busiest times of the year, not to mention barely above freezing temperatures?

No doubt it will be the same “old gang” that shows up – those that master-minded the revised community plan with all of these dandy new “focus areas” to congregate the masses without thought of endangerment with even increased traffic on clogged highways.

Any doubt the “plan” will pass with flying colors, minus sources for funding or any thought to mitigating already unbearable traffic congestion?

    The choke-hold tightens.

City study show almost no traffic on Brewer rd., the school is closed please get your facts straight.
A lot of people in this town and all the city council want to fix up the and protect historic property. Funding is in place is if the city need more money we will fine it.
And remember you pay no city tax.

  3. Apparently steve segner isn’t aware of the number of cars using Ranger Road to Brewer Road to connect to the second roundabout on 89A.

At least he’s honest enough to identify himself as a member or the “Old Gang.”

  4. When I want a good laugh I read Steve S (suckners) posts. I just giggle at his spelling. Most the time it is more like a puzzle trying to understand what he post. Outside of that everything he post is BS so I don’t bother.

We really should give out awards for the following-
    Biggest liar= SS
    More BS than BS=SS
    Largest scammer = Sedona Chamber
Drama queen and beggar= Jennifer W
AZ city misusing the largest amount of taxpayers funds= Sedona -city
    Most corrupt area= Sedona
Arrogant area (unwelcoming, complainers, takers) Sedona

Boy you all have some to be proud of.

    Stay calm & Shame on!

  6. I wondered over to the Old Ranger Station during the open house today with a friend to take a look around. Have been in the architectural field for over 40 years and love old buildings. My friend has worked on historic buildings and was also interested. We both walked on to the property with no biases one way or the other, just to look at old buildings. As we got back in the car after walking the property and two buildings, we were shaking our heads, laughing and saying things like ‘Holy Sh–, who thought this was a good idea’.

While speaking to the young man from Community Development who was answering questions, I mentioned just bringing the electric and plumbing into code will be at least $500,000, at which time he said ‘More’. Then there would be the removal of the 60’s upgrades, engineering and structure, refurbishing of historic features, etc. may add an additional $2,000,000+. I don’t know, but I’ve heard that there is asbestos in the buildings, and if that’s true removal is Not cheap.

If the thought is to close the two buildings to the public and just do esthetic up grades on their exteriors, clean up the 3.6 acres for access and safety, remove the two 60’s buildings (that may have asbestos in them), build the restrooms that are indicated, grade, landscape, buy and install the equipment shown, etc., that may be pretty expensive also. As one lady said in passing, she could visualize people swinging on the adult swings, looking at the buildings and wanting to donate to the site. That’s a lot of swinging.

Anyway, just thinking and thought I’ld share.
