Northern Arizona University Presents Romeo and Juliet

Flagstaff AZ (November 2, 2012) – Northern Arizona University Theatre is bringing one of the most popular Shakespearean plays to the NAU campus in Flagstaff. William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, will be directed by Dr. Mac Groves and performed on November 16, 17, 28, 29, 30 and December 1, 2012 at 8 PM, and November 18 and December 2, 2012 at 2 PM at the Clifford E. White Theatre. The performance days and times are noted on SedonaEye.com Calendar of Events.

The Shakespearean tragedy is about two young teenagers, Romeo and Juliet, who fall in love despite their family’s feud. They secretly marry and despite their passion for each other, things end badly. This version of Romeo and Juliet will be staged with modern dress in Italy.

“It’s a story about privileged kids in love and who are discovering their sexuality. They live in a world of passions and hormones and believe in the romantic ideas of love-at-first-sight,” said Groves. “Add to this uninvolved parents who are protective, indulgent and, yet, emotionally uninvolved, and the consequences are horribly predictable and tragic and there is no one around to support them or to provide a balance to their off-kilter perceptions of life or love. The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet is as much their parent’s tragedy as their own – and it is a familiar story often repeated in today’s culture.”

The large cast, comprised entirely of NAU Theatre students, includes Brandon Baker as Romeo, Sarah Goewey as Juliet, Megan Hansen as the Nurse, and Tony Latham as Mercutio. Other students in the performance include Woody Lotts, Travis Marsala, Allison Ritter, Tony Moschetti, Nathan Spector, Stephen Willis, Jackson Ramler, Anthony Gomez, Brady Weber, Robbie Weber, Kevin Morrow, Hannah Palazzi, John Grant, Katharine Boelter, and Amber Malinski.

Lighting design is by theatre student Rene’ DeCuir; costume design is by Associate Professor of Theatre, Kate Ellis; and scenic, props, and weaponry design is by Associate Professor of Theatre, Patrick Battles.

Romeo and Juliet is well-suited to a college cast, and Shakespeare is important to theatre students education,” explained director Groves. “There are over 480 Shakespeare festivals in the U.S. It seems to be a real American pastime.”

Individual tickets are $14 for general public and NAU staff ($12 for senior citizens); $8 for children and $2 for NAU students. Tickets can be purchased from the Central Ticket Office located in the NAU University Union (Building 30) across from Ardrey Memorial Auditorium and the Clifford E. White Theatre on campus, and or by calling 928-523-5661 or 888-520-7214, and or by visiting www.nau.edu/cto.

Free parking is available after 4:30 PM weekdays or on weekends in parking lot P13 located behind the NAU campus Cline Library. Visit www.SedonaEye.com Calendar of Events for the NAU Romeo and Juliet schedule.
