Sedona AZ (May 1, 2015) – National Park Service officials announced today that a Nevada man fell about 400 feet to his death while visiting the South Rim at Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona.

On Thursday, Las Vegas resident Juan Carreras-Soto, 29, was visiting with family when he may have tripped off a trail edge. His body was retrieved by helicopter on Friday from an area of steep and rugged terrain.

Park officials were notified of the man’s fall on Thursday afternoon, but recovery operations were delayed until Friday because of safety concerns and the lateness of the day.

The Coconino Medical Examiner and National Park Service are investigating Carreras-Soto’s death, however officials have indicated his fall appears accidental. This is the second confirmed fatality at the Grand Canyon in 2015. A Minnesota man, 73, died of a heart attack while hiking in February.

Tough to imagine how a family copes with this on vacation. Be mindful of your surroundings and don’t take unnecessary shortcuts hiking. It’s dangerous on those trails. We have to all obey rules of safe hiking on the Coconini website for a safe times in the Grand Canyon..
