Neighborly Concern and Family Dog Protect Missing Child

Missing child and dog

YCSO deputy with missing Mayer child and canine protector (child’s face deliberately blurred for protection)

Sedona AZ (May 13, 2013) Harley McGuire, SedonaEye.com Star Paws Up Columnist, is sharing this wonderful story of a Mayer canine hero that protected his little three year old family member, keeping her safe from harm, until Harley McGuire’s YCSO heroes could come and rescue her:

On May 9, 2013, at 8:00 o’clock in the morning, YCSO deputies were called to the Chimney Ranch Trailer Park on State Highway 69 in Mayer, Arizona, regarding a missing child. A neighbor saw the child wander away from her home but by the time he went out to check on her, she was gone. He immediately called YCSO to report his concerns.

When deputies arrived, they began to search an area at the rear of the park. They found the little girl and her dog standing on a small hill. Initially, the little girl’s dog would not let them get close but, eventually, deputies were able to escort both child and pet unharmed back to her parents.

Both of the child’s parents had been asleep when their 3-year-old daughter went missing. Normally the main door to the Chimney Ranch mobile home is dead bolted. The parents explained that an older sibling likely forgot to lock the door after he left for school. The door’s deadbolt is placed high enough that the 3-year-old could not reach it, and after deputies inspected the home and found no evidence of neglect or further safety issues, the little girl was released following parental counseling.

This story is being shared as a reminder that the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office has seen several cases in recent years involving missing children, some with deadly results. The key to a successful resolution is to call IMMEDIATELY once the child is unable to be found. This Mayer neighbor’s phone call, and YCSO quick response, were key to a happy outcome.

Citizens can contact the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office with information or questions at 928-771-3260 or the YCSO website.

  1. Hello Mr. Dog, We enjoyed your story. This reminds me of many old Vermont hometowns where everyone watched out for us in good ways and we loved our pets and animals. Good neighbors are gifts from God. Be kind to each other always. Mrs. Karilee Tull, (Morristown NJ) & Gilbert visitor
