Sedona AZ (December 10, 2013)On December 8, 2013, Oscar Baez-Esparza, 34, and Alejandro Baez-Esparza, 22, both from Texas, were arrested for several charges including Transportation of Methamphetamine and Marijuana for Sale.

At approximately 9:15 in the morning, a Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office deputy conducted a traffic stop involving a beige colored 2007 Cadillac sedan, displaying Oklahoma plates, on north Arizona Interstate 17 near the Camp Verde General Cook Trail off ramp. In conjunction with an equipment violation, the vehicle was observed impeding traffic by travelling at least 20 mph below the posted 65 mph speed limit. After the vehicle stopped, both the driver and passenger exited and walked back to the deputy in an apparent attempt to disassociate themselves from their car.

Both were detained. The driver was identified as Oscar Baez-Esparza and his passenger, Alejandro Baez-Esparza.

During a cursory viewing of the Cadillac’s interior, the deputy saw a plastic bag on the passenger floorboard containing what appeared as large bundles of packaged drugs, most likely methamphetamine. Oscar explained to the deputy that he and his cousin, Alejandro, were heading to Texas but seemed otherwise confused about the origin of his travel location and reason for being in the Phoenix area. Oscar denied carrying anything illegal in his vehicle and consented to the deputy’s request to search.

The deputy initially checked the contents of the plastic bag and confirmed it contained several pounds of methamphetamine in six separate wrapped bundles. The total weight was later determined to be seven pounds. During a check of the trunk, the deputy found a suitcase concealing more than sixty-five pounds of marijuana which had been compressed into nearly twenty packages for transportation and distribution.

The men were booked at the Camp Verde Detention Center and are being held without bond. The Cadillac was seized pending forfeiture proceedings.

Citizens can contact the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office with information or questions at 928-771-3260.
