Memorial Day Weekend Busy for Local Police

Coconino County Sheriff's Office Patrol MapSedona AZ (May 29, 2013) – During the Memorial Day weekend, the men and women of the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office were kept busy responding to calls, while conducting routine law enforcement and public education duties.

Between 6:00 o’clock in the evening Friday, May 24, 2013, and midnight on Monday, May 27, the Coconino County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to nearly 300 citizen calls for service and conducted over 550 area patrols, business checks, traffic stops, and other public interactions. And let’s not forget all that activity generated lots of paperwork – 73 departmental reports in total!

The Sheriff’s office fielded over forty calls about illegal campfires or other suspected violations of the present ban on open fires; the public is highly cognizant that open fires are a danger to homes, forests, meadows and wildlife if the ban is ignored or unenforced. The Sheriff’s office appreciated the public’s vigilance!

There were twenty-five calls about disturbing the peace. Mind your manners, please!

Deputies also helped over 40 motorists and responded to twenty medical related calls. Three motor vehicle collisions resulting in injuries occurred, one involving a motorcycle and two that occurred in recreational areas (Cinder Lakes OHV area and White Horse Lake Campground area).

There were 184 Traffic Stops throughout the Memorial Day weekend resulting in fifty-three speeding citations. The great news? While citations were issued for several alcohol violations, there were no DUI arrests.

With the start of summer activities and recreation on Lake Powell, the Boat Patrol issued fourteen Title 5 Boat Citations for violations over the weekend. Before putting yourself or a boat into the water, know and follow safe boating rules and regulations.

Several Search and Rescue (SAR) calls were received, several for children or teens, including a call about a three-year-old who wandered away from the family’s campsite. The weekend outcome of Patrol officers and bystanders working together was a safe return of all those lost. The Sheriff’s office thanks everyone who stepped forward to help others during the searches.

Search and Rescue Units also responded to two calls that required other agencies involvement:  The first was a call received on Saturday, May 26, about an overdue mountain biker lost between Flagstaff and Grand Canyon. The cyclist was located at Hanks Trading Post after being picked up by a motorcyclist near SP Crater on Sunday afternoon. Agencies involved in the search included the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office (patrol and SAR Unit), Guardian Air Transport, National Park Service, and the U.S. Forest Service. The second SAR Unit response was a body recovery on Monday, May 27. Coconino Detectives and the Medical Examiner’s Office are currently investigating the nature of the death and updates will be available when known.

Be safe out there.
