Mayoral and Council Candidates Survey Responses

smart metersSedona AZ (July 27, 2014) – Sedona Smart Meter Awareness (SSMA), the local residents’ group which has been informing the Sedona community about the effects of recently installed smart meters on health, privacy and safety, received survey responses from one mayoral and seven city council candidates.

It should be noted that in the city of Sedona and the Village of Oak Creek, approximately 25% of households opted not to install a smart meter and or to keep their present analog meters.

SSMA provides the following for consideration:

In choosing the candidates who will best SERVE and REPRESENT our interests, it is important to look for the candidate whose mind is open and not made up, as well as those who are creatively solution oriented.

We can always inform and educate someone on the latest developments and scientific studies on the subject of microwave radiation and wireless technology if they are not familiar with them.

It’s easy for candidate to claim that nothing more can be done. But in reality, the “solution(s)” has/have not been brought forth yet and there are plenty of alternatives and/or even new technologies not yet explored.

For those who think they know it all and are not open to other points of view beside their own, (they) are not the candidates who will make good leaders for our community.

For those who acknowledge not knowing everything but open to taking the “Precautionary Principle” and agree to “first do no harm,” they will learn as more new information is published each day.

Clearly, from the responses we received, more information needs to be shared with these candidates.

We received no response from one mayoral and three council candidates and one council candidate wrote that he thought the matter was taken care of and requires no further input.

The survey questions and respondents answers may be found at:

To my recollection more people opted out of Smart Meters than voted in the special election about the revised Community Plan. These people who will be making decisions for the next four years seem to have little to zero grasp on the true pulse of the community. They listen to only those they want to hear.

  2. What do Sedona, Cottonwood, Jerome, Clarkdale and Camp Verde City Managers, Mayors and Chamber of Commerce organizations do to support and recognize their local Adopt-A-Highway groups? I know the answer, do you?

Would this be a could campaign issue for the candidates seeking election?

Will Mayors, City Managers and Chamber of Commerce organizations lead this effort? What do your candidates have to say on this topic?

What would happen if every City Manager, Mayor and Chamber of Commerce organization across America encouraged their citizens to join them by working with their local state Adopt-A-Highway groups picking up highway litter? Wouldn’t this send a message that their community cares about the image and economy of their community?

If these community leaders selected the third weekend of February, May, August and November and routinely promoted this effort through their local media, could we as one nation make a difference in restoring the true beauty to “America the Beautiful”. The time spent per person, per year actually picking up litter would be 8 hours. Wouldn’t this be a good investment in their community?

If these community leaders would invite all Adopt-A-Highway groups to their City Council meeting at the end of each year and thank each group, by name, for their efforts, this would be a great way to show their appreciation for those that clean the highways. Paper certificates could be awarded to each group based on the frequency of their yearly efforts (4x Gold, 3x Silver, 2x Bronze and 1x Lead).

The following “Press Release” could start a nationwide movement towards achieving the “America the Beautiful & BagReadyJobs” goal. Using August 16, 2014 as the first nationwide effort to promote “America the Beautiful & BagReadyJobs”, this will provide every person in America a chance to participate in some capacity:

City Manager [Name], Mayor [Name] of [City or Town, State] and President Chamber of Commerce [Name] would like to invite all community leaders, businesses and citizens to join them on August 16, 2014 at [time and location] for the sole purpose of recovering the litter on [name of highway].

There will be a planning-coordination meeting for this effort on [date, time and place] and we would encourage any Adopt-A-Highway groups needing assistance to attend this meeting and provide the information required for this effort to meet the safety requirements of our local Adopt-A-Highway Program.

We will be formatting our effort on a program that was launched in Arizona by “Folksville USA and America the Beautiful & BagReadyJobs”. As a community, we have a chance to be part of an effort that is currently receiving national attention and certainly will benefit our community.

“Many hands with one goal” is the slogan “America the Beautiful & BagReadyJobs” is promoting nationwide. We will be following this format and encouraging our community youth groups to participate:

    “America the Beautiful & BagReadyJobs”
As proud American’s, will we honor our Armed Forces, veterans and communities by participating in the “America the Beautiful and BagReadyJobs” effort?

The “America the Beautiful & BagReadyJobs” effort will be used as a teaching, learning and earning opportunity for our nation’s youth groups. “BagReadyJobs” is funded by community businesses and residents.

Youth groups will learn how to develop marketing, sales, service and billing skills for their services rendered. Youth groups will negotiate fees with their local businesses and residents for picking up the litter on the highway and filling 33 gallon bags. The youth groups will work with their local Adopt-a-Highway groups and assist them in their efforts to restore the beauty to “America the Beautiful”.

The businesses and residents that pledge funding or products to the youth groups will negotiate a fee between $7 and 10 for every 33 gallon bag of trash the youth group fills to the brim.

The nation’s official Adopt-A-Highway group leaders will document the participation of the youth groups and the number of bags they fill. The youth groups will provide a copy of the Adopt-A-Highway group leader’s confirmation of their participation and the number of bags they filled to their funding sponsors.

In addition to displaying the trash-filled bags on the highway for 4 days as part of creating an awareness, education and recognition opportunity, the youth groups are required to write an essay that addresses the following five questions. The youth groups are to provide a copy of their essays to those funding their activities and to their local news media organizations.

    The essay questions are:
    1) What did you learn?
    2) What solutions might reverse the occurrence of highway litter and recycling efforts?
    3) How does highway litter impact the economy of your community?
    4) In addition to the negative economic effects, how does highway litter reflect on the residents?
    5) What will you do to do to make a difference?

Those providing funding will pay the youth groups for their services once all of the obligations have been fulfilled.

“America the Beautiful and BagReadyJobs” litter events are being promoted nationwide on the third Saturday of February, May, August and November, however, many Adopt-A-Highway groups select random dates for their cleanup activities. Our goal is to connect America’s Adopt-A-Highway groups needing help with youth groups wanting to help. Folksville USA would like to receive copies of the essays written so we may share them with others.

“America the Beautiful and BagReadyJobs” is the perfect opportunity for city and town leaders to challenge their community businesses and residents to support local youth groups that want to earn their funding. These young adults are our future role models and leaders. Recycling activities and getting some exercise are additional benefits that can be realized through this effort.

If our community could invest 8-12 hours per year participating in this effort and spreading our success nationwide through social media, this effort could be a frugal method to promote our community and community pride.

    Respectfully,

    Russ Cleaner, City Manager
    Charlie Roads, Mayor
Jennifer Cares, President Chamber of Commerce
    [City-Town, State + zip code]

  3. @ Gary Chamberlin.

Let the police pull over the litter bugs and let them spend part of their vacation picking up the trash that other fellow visitors leave behind.

Put up a volunteer sheet at the Sedona Chamber of Commerce visitor center and let’s sign the visitors up for a short stint in lieu of bed tax.

Use some of the money set aside for the chamber earmarked for trash pick up. It’ s all part of the package.

Visitors, money, city money, trash, pickup.
    Easy peasy.

  4. not impressed with results, folks! definately NOT voting for Lefever and Thompson or Moriarty! where’d these idiots come from? can’t we revoke their Sedona privileges? wanna guess why we’re going downhill & how about our quality of life? somebody ought to care because these buggers don’t!

  5. we want support for the beauty of spirit of the sanctuaries of red rocks & not soul stripping sucking politicians in sedona

  6. The Nelson's says:

This is a problem and it’s time elected officials recognized it to be such. Give a hoot about yourselves if no one else. Tell APS to remove your smart meters NOW.
