Manuel Cruz Files for Mayor of Glendale

Glendale AZ (May 29, 2012)  – Manuel Cruz filed over 1400 nominating petition signatures for the mayoral office of Glendale Arizona today.

“Our campaign is focusing on jobs, education, and accountability, and the people of Glendale are getting plugged in and fired up,” said Cruz. “People know we can’t go on like nothing’s wrong. City Hall has to manage its budget and priorities just like everyone else.”

During the petition process, more than 150 volunteers braved the heat to knock on more than 5,000 doors in a grassroots effort to get Cruz on the ballot.

“This is a sure-fire sign of campaign strength, but it’s only the beginning,” said campaign manager, Chuck Foy. “Glendale is a great city with a small-town feel. We look forward to honest, door-to-door discussions with voters about how to move our economy forward.”

Cruz is a former national business executive and explosives engineer with U.S. mining companies. In 2010, he ran as Democratic nominee for the post of Arizona State Mine Inspector. He is a long-time resident of Glendale, where he and his wife are raising their family.

  1. Statement of Manuel Cruz Candidate for Mayor of Glendale on the Phoenix Coyotes agreements:

“Yesterday, the Glendale City Council voted 4-2 to move Hockey in Glendale to a place no other professional sports franchise enjoys.

It is unfortunate the Council made the decisions they did without having fully vetted the agreements in the public eye. Decisions made in closed-door meetings out of the eye of taxpayers.

These agreements come at a time when Glendale is laying off workers, reducing needed services, and raising taxes that will hurt our small businesses and most vulnerable citizens.

While I am not the current Mayor of Glendale, I can tell you that I would not have done things this way. I am disappointed in my City Council.

Let me be clear. I support the concept of a Hockey team in Glendale. However, like any other Glendale business, it should pay its own way.”
