Man Scouting Elk Shot in Hand

Coconino County Sheriff BadgeFlagstaff, AZ (December 3, 2012) – A twenty-three year old man from Indianapolis, Minnesota, reported he was shot in the hand by an unknown, and unseen person, while in Northern Arizona scouting for elk.

On Sunday, December 2, 2012, at 10:23 in the morning, the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office received a shooting report and sent deputies and Emergency Medical Personnel to Interstate 40 at Welch Road where the victim was waiting. Shortly after the deputies arrival, the victim was transported to the Flagstaff Medical Center by Guardian Medical Transport.

According to the victim, he came to Flagstaff for the purpose of assisting his brother with an upcoming elk hunt. He was on a hillside off of Welch Road and was using binoculars to search the terrain for elk. The victim suddenly dropped the binoculars and realized his hand was bloodied, disfigured and severely injured. The victim was unable to provide any information regarding a possible suspect or suspects.

Detectives are investigating the possibility that the victim was shot from a distance by another person hunting in the area.
