Looking Into Our Crystal Ball

Sedona AZ (December 26, 2008) – The real deal, the number one issue and story in Sedona for 2009 will be the devastating effect our global economy is going to have on our local businesses and what our local government is going to do about it.

The Ochser trial aftermath; the 76 lights or more for 89A battle; an NSA designation for Sedona and an alternate route through Red Rock Crossing will all take a back seat to this looming Leviathan of a problem.

Hunger, unemployment, rampant foreclosures will also plaque the city as visitors dry up due to the New Great Depression gaining global steam.

Community food Banks will be working overtime to meet the needs.

Council-power positioning will further create animosity between members. The recalls will fail.

Printed newspapers will continue to lose weight. Local law enforcement will be directed to step up ticketing to maintain revenue.

A major Sedona resort will go bankrupt. At least two-large galleries will bite the dust.

McDonald’s will flourish.

Local booze sales will rise due to people wanting to escape the reality of their economic sorrows.

Day workers will disappear because there will be no work.

Whew! Is that negative enough for you?

But I do have a positive wish list:

1. The City takes the $240 grand it was going to pay for consultation services on 89A and spends it on food for the hungry and helping pay emergency bills for local families on the edge.

2. Local businesses offer Sedona residents fat discounts for shopping locally.

3. Every person who gets the Sedona-Verde Valley Times sent free to their homes sends us ten bucks to help us get the word out.

4. The Feds donate the $1.8 million they were going to spend on the 76 lights, to help struggling businesses get by.

5. The city council votes to allow those living in the Chapel Road area a pass if they wish to connect to the new sewer system or not.

That’s just a few things off the top of my head.

My predictions should not be construed as negative. They simply are events that are going to happen we need to be conscious of and not be sticking our heads in the ground hoping they won’t come. Who remembers all the cheery assessments of how fat our city coffers were during the elections? Now, reality has come home to roost.

By not living in denial and soberly assessing what’s in store perhaps we can be better prepared to weather the storm.
