Life Goes On with Eddie Maddock

SedonaEye.com columnist Eddie Maddock

Sedona AZ (September 8, 2014) – “When tempers and fury rage, frequently, logic seems to prefer to go on sabbatical. When folks who have disagreed on past issues and decisions have the maturity and good sense to combine their collective thinking in a sensible fashion, so as to unite and defend a measure for the right reason, at the conclusion what’s to stop them from shaking hands and saying, “It’s been real, now you go back to your corner and I’ll go back to mine, and it will be business as usual.”

What some people don’t understand is — that’s so typical of Sedona! However, it pleases me more than anything to experience a hand-shake and cordial reconnection with people once a verdict is in and the reality of “It’s time to move on” is effectively activated.

To those with such an attitude, you are winners – no matter what the decision was with regards to a heated controversial issue.” Quote from “In A Manner of Preaching” – Sedona Eye, December 12, 2011.

And so it is with the conclusion of the Sedona Primary Election, with Sandy Moriarty prevailing for the position of Mayor, and two of three City Council seats to be filled by Angela LeFevre and Jon Thompson. The remaining Councilman will be either Rio Robson or Scott Jablow, to be decided at the General Election on the fourth of November.

The new Mayor and three Council Members will be officially sworn in at the City Council meeting on November 25, 2014. Each of the above named people have expressed the common desire to “give back to the community” and a willingness to devote the time and dedication to serve Sedona to the best of their ability. Solutions to traffic congestion, fiscal responsibility, and growth management rank high among the group, along with implementation of the revised Community Plan.

A unique concern has been identified by Rio Robson, “Meetings that are three-plus hours long are offensive and an insult and do not make it easy for citizens to participate.” Are there any seconds to that motion? In the meantime, it will be business as usual with the present City Council.

Mayor Adams has recently gone on record objecting to the term “lame-duck” stating he will still be the official Mayor until the latter part of November, and intends to remain pro-active. In preparation for his upcoming 2014 State of the City Address on Thursday, October 16, at 5:00 PM in the City Council Chambers, as a preview, the mayor has defined a list of achievements during his past six years. For example, he claims the city debt in 2008 was $72,500,000 compared to today’s indebtedness of $45,000,000, with plans to continue reducing that debt 5 million dollars per year. He expresses gratitude to the 67% of voters who approved the continuation of Home Rule and considers it a sign of validation of good management since he has been Sedona’s mayor.

On the other hand, the mayor admits creating revenue sources, for various Capital Projects, remains unknown. For example, there’s no clear funding source for the storm water management project estimated in excess of $20,000,000. He acknowledges the need for arterial roads and more parking districts, at the same time pointing out provisions for the Lynx transit service and bicycle and walking opportunities which were provided during his tenure. He remains hopeful for new industry to create funding, without the need for increasing taxes, and cites development of the Cultural Park, Yavapai College, expanded medical facilities, and the 200 acres at the wetlands as excellent potential sources. But, of course, Revenue Bonds and Obligatory Bonds also remain options, and Adams suggests this is a good time for the “new” council to consider these because the “rates are low.” He expects implementation of the public process for improvements to the Brewer Road property, the “Heart of Sedona“, to occur in 2015 under the guidance of the new city council.

Adams is emphatic the new council and mayor will be stepping into far better conditions than he did six years ago. He believes they are in a much improved situation with the newly revised Community Plan to seek specific visions via public process and pursue preferred strategic methods for implementation of proposed common focus areas. (NOTE: Source of Adams’ comments = SV3 Video News)

Conspicuous by absence during these discussions has been the excessive influence the Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Bureau, and Sedona Lodging Council has had over this election, and city operations in general. Clearly the over-extended advantage allowed to this special interest combination has not been publicly discussed. It remains a question if, at some point in time, intestinal fortitude will be displayed to pull in the reins on this out-of-control – yet allowed to be in control – unconventional situation to which Sedona has been subjected.

We have a city contract with the Chamber of Commerce for a “City of Sedona Visitor’s Center” still allowed to operate under the flag of Chamber of Commerce. Worse yet, the city has a $1.3 million dollar contract with the Chamber of Commerce for “Destination Marketing” and CEO/President Jennifer Wesselhoff stated (RRNews 8/29/14), “The chamber hired Owens Harkey Advertising to create a new marketing campaign.”

What? Could it have been an oversight for Ms. Wesselhoff’s neglect to identify the contract…for the purpose of marketing the City of Sedona (not the chamber) as being the necessary tool to provide the chamber with the financial means to hire that outside firm?

Why do you suppose the City of Sedona didn’t retain Owens Harkey Advertising to begin with and eliminate the middle-man (chamber)? Wesselhoff further goes on to refer to “a 90-second video capturing all aspects of the Sedona area” and that it “can be seen on YouTube, local television stations, the chamber’s website, and in area hotels.”

What? Why isn’t it on the city’s website since that’s the source of funding and the purpose of the video is to market City of Sedona? But, of course, Wesselhoff again conveniently failed to acknowledge that fact as she continues referring to the city financed Sedona Visitor’s Center as “Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center in Uptown.” Will there be anyone on the “new” city council with substantial integrity to step up to the plate and appropriately deal with this current divisive allocation of public funds…that appears are being used exclusively to promote the Sedona Chamber of Commerce, a special interest organization that admittedly represents regional businesses in direct competition with city based businesses?

Repeating again, the alleged original intent for city contracts with the Chamber of Commerce was stated as a means to promote the City of Sedona. Or was it always this current council’s position to glorify the Chamber of Commerce? Was that the real reason all along for avoiding competitive bidding and to ignore appropriately identifying the City of Sedona Visitor’s Center?

Of course time will tell, although the answer to that question quite possibly lies in the outcome of this election and the witch hunt implemented to make it happen.

Awful the city council thinks this is okay.

    Thanks Eddie.

  2. Roger says:

About all these plans for development @ the sewer plant. Wonder how the troops can be so certain Yavapai County will approve. After all that property is NOT within city limits. Of course the trend with this council is that Sedona has no city limits. Guess I answered my own question.

  3. Harold W. says:

Any notion that funding policy with the chamber is going to happen is pointless. Even if new council members have enough integrity to investigate and confirm Sedona taxes are being spent to promote the chamber and lodging council instead of City of Sedona there’s already enough for a council majority to keep and even increase funding to C of C: Jessica Williamson, Mark DiNunzio, Sandy Moriarty, John Martinez. (although recently J. Martinez appears to have wised up slightly since he actually voted against the budget.)

So supposing he (Martinez) sees the light and doesn’t continue to support ongoing give-away to chamber most likely Scott Jablow will since he was endorsed by Steve Segner. Angela LeFevre and J. Thompson, who knows? Rio Robson, if elected, will most likely support C of C funding because of his own business. Just a guess. A majority of four is well and alive.

    Point #1: Nothing will change.
Point #2: Guess J. Thompson was correct. The vocal minority got their comeuppance.

  4. Appreciates this article!

  5. Insane says:

    Rio Robson is correct! Insane.

  6. Mary S. says:

Our only recourse is to wait and see what happens. When the money well runs dry (which is likely to happen with the ambitious wish list over and above capital improvements) the chamber/lodging folks will have feathered their own nests and prepare to flock to greener ($$$) resources. Little doubt the agenda of the newly elected added to what we have will continue to kneel to the ongoing conflict of interests within the “Sedona(?)” Chamber of Commerce and kick residents to the curb. Pity.

  7. John W says:

My Temper and Fury is just Raging as I believe I am being really Logical, Eddie:

My suggestion to Scott Jablow, (as he is in a runoff with our Real Local Guy Rio Robson) – is as follows: Scott Jablow – since you somehow got elected to the Fire District Board – why don’t you just stay there and let them benefit from your supposed intelligent benefits and Please – let our town move forward without your New Jersey attitude?

As a Sedona P&Z Commish member you have been a buffoon who has clearly demonstrated that you have pretty much no understanding of the legal ordinances and etc regarding the abilities of this City to oversee any project that comes before the P&Z Commission…….you just try to swim in murky waters and without basis…You want to dredge as much money out of any business to make you look good – just so you can attach or require items that are outside of legal requirements. Guess you are banking on the applicants will not and do not want to ensue legal fees to fight the garbage and without legal backing that the P&Z requires? .

Seriously, Scott, it can only be an East Coast bloated ego that allows you to believe you are our newest messiah – when in fact you are one of the biggest parts of our problems as you just spew and never catch up with the legal definitions of any position you sit in.

Instead you just shoot from your personal hip attitude and damn anyone who gets in your way……….even though you can’t really substantiate your basis of votes or accusations. You don’t know how to get your Facts straight and usually forget reality….only in order to make your narrow minded point.

Actually, I have a friend who you took on a few years ago regarding the Let The People Vote 89A issue – and you were just hell bent and filed a complaint with the City and you didn’t even know what you were taking about: you had the wrong name and wrong address……….so I can only surmise you don’t have anything else correct!

    Guess what?

You are just a “want to be” and not a Player in the reality of a tough little town.

Normally I would not be so personal in a post – but I’m just tired and so over all the garbage that the “outsiders” keep presenting to somehow try to prove that they know so much MORE than all of us – that somehow we’re just dumb.

Somehow WE were Smart Enough to preserve, promote and sustain what YOU and they came here and bought into – so all these New want-to-be’s and newbie’s and un-vested folks think they have the right to dictate our outcome!!!!

Get a Grip People and Please do NOT vote for Scott Jablow as he is not one of US!

  8. As much as I object to candidate bashing, it’s become important for me to comment here.

When Jablow went along with the decision to redirect traffic from Goodrow Lane against the signatures of all the residents being denied the use of their “forever” road (except for, I believe one) it raised a huge question. As a councilman will Mr. Jablow have such little regard for the subdivision where I live should changes be proposed which the residents object to?

There’s little doubt in my mind that he will be elected because he has strong support from the Chamber of Commerce and Steve Segner (Lodging Council) who collectively managed to also kick Cliff Hamilton to the curb. It isn’t only residents who are subjected to that treatment. Even candidates running for mayor or council seats are at risk of being attacked under gang rule.

  9. It didn’t occur to me until fighting rain induced jungle growth in my yard today that there was a slight edit to the title of this article.

As submitted it was “Life Goes On” but SE Editor/Publisher took legitimate license and added “with Eddie Maddock.”

Thoughts during my sweating love affair with my overgrown yard was . . . hmm . . . maybe “Editor/Publisher” would have garnered more readers if the title had been “Life Goes On WITHOUT Eddie Maddock.”

    Life’s a song. Sing it! If you can’t carry a tune, dance to it . . . :-)

    Eddie Schell Souvall Maddock

  10. Speaking of Owens Harkey & Associates, David Harkey, a partner in the Phoenix based advertising firm was among those who contributed $1,000 to Sandy Moriarity’s campaign fund and Steve Segner at $500 was the biggest contributor to Scott Jablow. That Destination Marketing contract City has with Chamber of Commerce is on a roll!

  11. Helen says:

Seriously, James Harrington – while I am appalled, I believe you regarding the $1000 donation to Sandy by a guy whose firm just recently got a Sedona Council City Contract. And then I am appalled all over again!

The Partner named David Harkey – of the Marketing Paid group out of Phx ( Owens Harkey & Associates) actually paid $1,000 to our new mayors campaign?????????????? OMG

I read this and did go back to double check your facts and what a WHOMP of reality and fact did I encounter.

You are totally correct on all levels which includes the very strange guy Steve Segner who seems to have his own agenda that does not match the majority….as he uses his gorilla tactics etc…….what a cheap creep he actually is!

So that takes us to another level of creditability and supposed representation of “all” of us.

Gorilla Steve Segner, nor Mr. David Harkey (whose company has a contract with the City) – define our community – even though they keep throwing money at us and hope it will stick.

And while I so totally disagree with their gorilla tactics – they did win this round – but they all need to know that the eyes of God are on them……so they better get it right and make OUR lives better – instead of putting money in their short pockets!

They are the typical narrow minded, self serving who work to only their goals and damn the best interest’s of the majority.

  12. Marc says:

the campaign contribution should be returned now, it’s unethical if not illegal, and why did Moriarty receive it & no one else? what was promised?

  13. Alan says:

First. Have to say first that the dialogue is worth the visit to this site and it’s uncovered more information than any other news including the thousands of gossipers in town.

Second. Why would this group donate to a (or more?) campaign when funding comes from the Chamber? Answer. The funding comes from the City. Moral. You figure it out. It’s obvious.

  14. @Helen

It would be simpler if the Harkey firm actually had the contract with the city. Unfortunately, it’s the Chamber of Commerce that subcontracted with Owens Harkey & Associates, which was one of Maddock’s questions. Why wouldn’t the city have contracted directly with a “professional” advertising agency in the first place. Clearly the Chamber of Commerce isn’t qualified to have the stand alone contract with the city. Otherwise they wouldn’t have subcontracted.

It seems it’s only the Sedona taxpayers here both residents and tourists that are getting short changed. Obviously it isn’t David Harkey and his firm, who have paid a sizable amount to insure “their” favorite was elected mayor. And, keep in mind, this firm is in Phoenix!

  15. Lisa! says:

whenever that city med marijuana store opens nobody will give a damn & that’s the plan, btw what fat cats in town own it

  16. Marty says:

Nice thought Helen that the “eyes of God are on them.” If only that were true. However and unfortunately “God” in Sedona government isn’t allowed because such a thing would be politically incorrect. Just check with “Sand’s” pal, Jessica Williamson, if you don’t believe me.

  17. Lost Cause says:

Wise up. All of you. Don’t you get it? It’s called :

    WORKING THE SYSTEM

The sooner Sedona goes broke the better off for us. That will be the true legacy left by this idiotic city council that set the wheels in motion to allow this to happen

  18. Ahso says:

Ahso “Lost Cause.” Is “working the system” per chance akin to a hooker walking the streets? Kyou-wa ii tenki desu? Ahso!

  19. STAND UP says:

Are you all so weak that you’ll let the lodging-chamber push you around?

If so then your not as smart as I thought. Who took back 89A? Together unite, stand up, speak up. Only in numbers do you matter.

If you don’t try they win. City Council hates you anyway so go ahead write them, speak up you have nothing to lose. Post gather join forces,

Don’t vote for anymore “olde boys” Boycott them as they do you. Support each other, non chamber business. Vote for someone new Rio is the better choice Jablow has already proved he doesn’t care about you THE PEOPLE.

  20. Charles W. says:

Really, if this city council had a lick of decency they would immediately enforce the 30-day cancellation clause in the Destination Marketing contract with the Chamber of Commerce.

But of course we all know that won’t happen. If they had a lick of decency none of this would have happened in the first place.

$1000 contributed from the ad agency sub-contracted with city funding paid to the Chamber of Commerce?

In other words, follow the red-rock road and it takes us back to public funds indirectly paid for Sandy Moriarty’s campaign. Is that even legal?

Oh sure, the $1000 was only contributed by David Harkey, just a partner in the firm of Owens Harkey & Associates. Puleeze!!

  21. Helen C says:

To all the above: the Council has a HUGE “Lack of decency”; and Loves and lives by the concept of the “olde boys” concept that think they rule and run our town; and YES, the Lodging Council -aka- Steve Segner and all their members who paid money to certain candidates who will sleep with them and their wants – think they rule our lands in conjunction with the crazy ass Chamber of Regional Commerce!

@ STAND UP wrote: “Who took back 89A? Together unite, stand up, speak up. Only in numbers do you matter.”

We Now know that over 70% of our registered voters took DOWN AND REVERSED the supposed intelligent Council and their personal peccadilloes and the voters took back and continued to give the State ownership of 89A to the State rather then the Council’s personal and non vested interested in Sedona……..so come back – you 70% and continue to take back our little town!!!!! It’s not too late!

We need to monitor and hold accountable our new mayor Sandy and then we need to find the means and ways to get Angela to shut up on her entitlements issues, as well as Jessica’s entitlement mindset….and get them to really represent US. Opps – wasn’t it our new Mayor Sandy who worked so hard to get Affordable housing in play here? Isn’t it Jessica who just follows Sandy Morriority to what ever Sandy tells her to say and vote on?

Lest we forget: Jessica had been a City employee prior to her being fired by the City….Hummm – cause for question as to her real care and understanding of Sedona…..or is she just attempting to do pay back? Let us not forget that, for some reason, Sandy Morriority decided to push Jessica forward as a Council Member………….crazy concept – yet I’m thinking that Sandy Morriority chose Jessica as a soft touch that Sandy could mold into her liking…guess Sandy is just trying to undo old angsts she has.

Then we need to vote AGAINST Scott Jablow! … and vote in favor of a “Real” Local guy named RIO ROBSON……….Transplant Scott just wants to enhance his waning years while Rio wants to promote and preserve and improve our City structure….a City he grew up in and is vested in…what a novel concept.

  22. Roger says:

Speaking of a thousand dollars here and there, a comment under another article indicates Angela LeFevre transferred that amount ($1000) to Scott Jablow (after her success in being elected.) No wonder he (Jablow) was reported blowing braggart steam at the victory party for Sandy Moriarty held by Steve Segner at El Portal, Steve’s “home away from home” and address used to register as a Sedona resident voter.

  23. @Helen C

By Jove I think you may be on to something. Sandy Moriarty was Campaign Treasurer for Jessica Williamson when she ran for council in 2012. (which was after they both worked on the Housing Commission to push for and succeed in allowing ADUs in single family residential zoning)

  24. Weasels – City Council, Chamber of Commerce, Lodging Council (Segner), and Owens Harkey & Associates (Harkey.)

Weasels ……. ALL of them but mostly CITY COUNCIL.

  25. Sedona Sam says:

Sedona is shrinking as they do not manage things.

City of Prescott uses bed tax to promote the city ONLY. Wake up.Prescott is growing maybe this is why.

  26. Max says:

just went into the elected candidate’s financials on the City web sit and found Mz Angela – to be very specific- and found that SHE gave Scot Jablow $1000. of her left over funds!!!

OMG!!! She actually believes she rules? So – again new Mayor Sandy – How are you gonna deal with the largest vote getter as Angelia wheels and deals?

Sedona Sam is very correct and Mz Jennifer needs to come to grips with her shadow routine.

    What a cluster………………….. this is!

  27. Sign me as a concerned Sedona voting citizen.

What are you thinking City Council and P&Z???? Most areas will NEVER allow motels/hotels/timeshares to be put near public schools!! No different than liquor stores going near schools!! NOT A GOOD IDEA!! These places CATER TO TRANSIENTS and look at Cottonwood area for motel hookups with underage kids from out of state and elsewhere pervs!!

Second? It’s an eyesore at the Gateway. High end construction is not a Residence Inn or a Marriott that will eventually in a downturn become Motel 6.

    http://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/Las-Palmas-Motel-South-Los-Angeles-Gang-Injunction-LA-City-Attorney-Mike-Feuer-Florencia-13-236814431.html

  28. Susan L. says:

Nice link you included for review (Schools Near Motels/Hotels.) Of course the rationale will probably be this is Sedona and not a metropolitan area.

Well as it appears planners and future council members will be on a fast-track to totally remove any trace of the once pledged “small town atmosphere.” With the recent discussion at a special meeting about rectifying traffic congestion, pray tell what logic there is to add to what some already perceive to be a problem?

Roundabouts? Arterial routes through residential subdivisions? Medians? (Once on ADOT’s agenda but businesses screamed like mashed cats. “Don’t obstruct entry into MY business” was the cry.)

Then we have the ongoing but ignored matter of financing these outlandish suggestions. Already in the works $250,000 for another traffic study? Is ADOT aware of that or isn’t the city aware that thank goodness the State of Arizona continues to own the two State Highways going through Sedona. (SR179 and 89A)

Another reminder of the inept results of Sedona City road design: the less than one mile of 89A uptown.

Sure, bring on more hotels (aren’t there a total of three presently being considered including the Mariott?)

Bottom line. We just had an election and apparently what you are seeing is exactly what voters are seeking. Go figure.

  29. Just when you think the election can’t get any dirtier the word now is that Scott Jablow continues bashing his remaining competitor, Rio Robson, on a door-to-door crusade, in particular making attacks on the family business that existed long before Scott Jablow probably even heard about Sedona, Arizona.

When candidates for City Council have no better course of action than to attack and dig up dirt, which was the unfortunately successful tactic applied by Steve Segner in his campaign to discredit former mayoral candidate Cliff Hamilton, what does that say about their own character values? How will such individuals perform as elected officials? How can they be trusted?

  30. Frustrated says:

At the risk of another argument with my “other” half, it’s become important that I express some concerns.

We were recipients of a phone call from Scott Jablow prior to the primary election. Although he politely inquired as to our concerns, such as traffic, roads, etc. his main thrust was to discredit his opponents. In particular one former council candidate was theoretically assassinated for being a member of a Board of Directors on a local non-profit. Isn’t Mr. Jablow, in fact, presently sitting on two boards himself: The Sedona Planning & Zoning Commission as well as the Sedona Oak Creek Fire District Board of Directors?

Mr. Jablow erroneously accused an innocent person of having been responsible for an unfortunate e-mail that was circulated without accurate factual information. Why wasn’t he so quick to pass judgment on far more damaging e-mails circulated by Steve Segner (appeared on this web site) clearly indicating a deliberate attempt to discredit Cliff Hamilton?

Could it be because Steve Segner is now financially vested in the success of Mr. Jablow’s winning the remaining seat on the Sedona City Council?

There’s little question that both candidates vying for the final chair (Scott Jablow & Rio Robson) will support the Chamber of Commerce. Clearly anyone running during this campaign who didn’t focus to some extent on the continuation of funding the Chamber was dead in the water before even hitting it from the diving board. However, if Jablow’s endeavors are to discredit Robson by indicating he is only for tourists and not residents, then why would the Chamber of Commerce be supporting him (Jablow)? They (C of C) are recipients of $1.3 for the purpose of “destination marketing” which leaves another question. Since when is a center-fold type ad in Red Rock Rewards, a locally mailed coupon booklet, a good investment to attract people other than day-trippers at best? Go figure.

Sedona has all of a sudden been “gifted” with a first. A young business man, born and raised in Sedona, the first to my knowledge to venture out into the nasty world of local politics. For the present City Council and Rio Robson’s fellow members on the Community Plan Steering Committee to blatantly come out endorsing Scott is pretty insulting to put it mildly. However, on the other hand wasn’t it the members of this City Council that publicly endorsed Cliff Hamilton? Maybe that factored into his demise. Who knows.

At any rate, to my knowledge Rio Robson has not lowered himself to the tactics of desperation as have been and are presently being displayed by Scott Jablow.

May the best man win. Will it again be an 11th hour Sedona Red Rock News editorial that calls the shots?

  31. Interesting that Scott Jablow is now trashing Rio Robson, because before the primary election Rio was one of His favorites. Also interesting is that Scott has now taken donation money from Angela since before the primary election He was bashing Her. Go figure.

I have been trying to be quiet about Scott but I find that I have to say something. Knowing Him for a few years on a more personal level I have to say I will be voting Against Him! He is absolutely Not interested in anything the residents have to say. He knows everything. Will say things outright then Deny it. Thinks He has said things but hasn’t. A scarey person to have running for a public office, and being on public boards. And if that isn’t enough He believes that Eddie Maddock is a “Blight in Sedona”, and that Jean “Makes up all Her figures…” and couldn’t say enough bad things about Her. I could go on and on but you get the idea.

Please don’t vote for Scott Jablow.

  32. Not to worry, “Yes, it’s a Shame.” For sure I’ve been called worse things than “A blight on Sedona” such as “Whack-Job” for starters in addition to the pleasure(?) of having Rob Adams express concern over my “poison-pen” writings.

It was told to me during the course of the campaign that Scott Jablow was advising people to avoid “Sedona Eye” for a multitude of reasons, and of course freedom of speech and choices so far remain a viable option in Sedona (with emphasis on the “so far.”)

All in all and considering the very nasty accusations Mr. Jablow made against certain really good people running for city council, I consider it in a convoluted sort of way an honor to be among them. A good policy is to consider the source of finger-pointers which includes as best we can an accurate evaluation of their underlying motives.

If by chance I had been willing to work with Mr. Jablow in a positive way to support his success in this election I wonder if I would still be, in his estimation, “A blight on Sedona?” Well, we will never know because such a thing never occurred.

BTW, my attorney has strict instructions to remain silent when she is notified of my “passing.” Why would I want so many people to take pleasure in learning that I’m no longer around? Seriously.

  33. William S. says:

This Mr. Scott Jablow is really quite amazing when you stop to think about it. As another recent Sedona transplant from New York, he seems to know all there is to know about everything.

As a father of two sons most likely in the same age bracket as Rio Robson, it makes me wonder why in the world he (Scott) wouldn’t be giving Rio accolades instead of sock-it-to-you action. Does anyone know if Jablow’s own sons are as accomplished as Rio Robson who, at 30, manages the family business and still had time to serve as Vice-Chair on the Community Plan Revision Steering Committee.

Whether or not his sons are able to claim similar fame, how would Scott Jablow react if others were to attack his own flesh and blood as it appears he is attempting to do to Rio Robson?

  34. Judaism 101 says:

    • Gossip and slander are serious sins in Judaism
    • Judaism forbids causing any deception or embarrassment through speech
    • It is forbidden even if the statement is true
    • There are some exceptions that allow tale-bearing

Thou shalt not go up and down as a tale-bearer among thy people (Lev. 19:16), and ye shall not wrong one another (Lev. 25:17, which according to tradition refers to wronging a person with speech).

Scott Jablow is a Rakhil. The harm done by speech is even worse than the harm done by stealing or by cheating someone financially: money lost can be repaid, but the harm done by speech can never be repaired.

    http://www.jewfaq.org/speech.htm

Do NOT vote for him. I have heard him sin many times.

  35. Ms Smith says:

Sedona controllers have used the name calling and bullying since before incorporation. If you don’t agree with them then the good ole boys will slander you. Agree with them and they love you!

If we learned one thing from our August 26th vote we learned that those controlling the almighty dollar play every card they can. Even the dirty ones. As the chamber, lodging, Segner, RR news did with Cliff.

They want you all to be submissive, silent and dumb flatlanders so that they can continue to control and manipulate city hall. Those like Scott Jablow who spread rumors and call names fit right in. Vote for someone who is FRESH, HONEST, that has you and the Cities best interest. Make a statement your done with the dirty dark side of Sedona. Stop going along with a dirty dark side of Sedona.

Shine a positive light on Sedona. Tell all your neighbors. VOTE for RIO!

  36. Marge says:

If a “blight on Sedona” exists it’s the City Council allowing the Chamber of Commerce to take control of our city. What more proof do you need of corruption when you have a partner in the advertising agency retained by the C of C and being paid for with city taxes, contributing $1000 to get Sandy Moriarty elected as mayor? That’s just one of many examples of legal manipulation and the majority of Sedona voters apparently sit in a state of bliss like the three monkeys: Hear no evil, See no evil, and Speak no evil. They are easy marks for the likes of Steve Segner and Scott Jablow.

  37. Collusion says:

It’s pretty clear that the City and CofC colluded and we, the residents, need to recognize this fact. We need to explore other political and legal routes in anticipation that something like this will happen again here so that we can be proactive. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/collusion

  38. Harold W. says:

@Collusion: Just one problem. How do we prove it? Another comment suggests “legal manipulation” and when registered voters are so stupid they don’t recognize what’s going on what can be done?

Again it seems the true problem lies withing the over 50% of voters who remain in a trance and are clueless about the facts of life of today’s Sedona. No more Alice in Wonderland stories to be written in this corrupt pit of vipers.

  39. STAND UP says:

By the lodging industry endorsing the Collusion they are the enablers. ALL the in City Lodging should DEMAND 100% of revenues they collect should go for their exclusive team.
Not one owner or manager spoke up. Enabling to hurt yourselves by advertising the region. It’s YOUR money LODGING. By the Council gifting your revenues to the benefit of your competition YOU have created a monster lodging.
Steve Segner, CofC are now controlling City Hall. Sad for our City Manager, disrespectful. No wonder he quit.

No city markets the region. Sure there are “TMD” Tourism Marketing District (TMD) http://www.sandiego.gov/treasurer/taxesfees/tot/ They confused the issue. City does not pay 100% for a TMD!

Lodging it is time you create your own CLUB of in city limits lodging only. This is your only hope. You got taxed without representation.

Lodging owners YOU need to stand up. WAKE UP!!!!!! Your the only hope. You can take it back just like 89A! Take back the bed tax ! I’ll sign the petition.

  40. Warren says:

“Again it seems the true problem lies withing the over 50% of voters who remain in a trance and are clueless about the facts of life of today’s Sedona.”

    @ Harold W – You nailed it.

I don’t blame Steve Segner, the $1,000 adman donor, the COC, the SRRN or any of the various players who are just doing what is to be expected of them. It’s the voters (and non-voters) who are to blame.

People get the government they tolerate.

  41. News Flash says:

And here is where Gorilla Tactics come to reality as Steve Segner and Scot Jablow has zero ethics:

I’ve gotten the following from a very secure source:

“Sedona staff members have reported that Scott Jablow, candidate for city council, was discovered alone in some staff offices going through files. They (city staff) had reported this to the City Manager who then ordered Jablow to stay out of staff offices and work area. Several weeks ago some city staff members were told by Jablow: ‘Ya better be nice to me because I’m gonna get elected and I’ll be your boss!'”

It gets better – Rio Robson’s campaign signs have been stolen from his own property and Scott Jablow “cruses” Rio’s neighborhood and Scott has placed his signs in city right-of-ways on Coffee Pot and Rodeo Road.

Barbara Litrell, who is a seated council woman, has placed an ad in the RRN showing her support for Scott J. Is this the same council woman who stated she “Knew the heart beat of the community” by her voting for the City to own 89A where over 70% of the registered voters disagreed with her a few years ago? So how out of touch with reality is this current council woman Barbara Litrell…………think she is just swimming – bet yet – doing a lame dog paddle to protect her supposed legacy? Too Funny and way too lame.

News Flash = its time for the silent majority to take out, yet again, these wanna be’s and only Vote YES for Rio Robson!

  42. Donna Joy says:

    Dear Ms. Maddock,

I reading this post and am shocked that someone would blather about you.

Ms. Maddock is well respected, fair, honest and the most incredible writer.

Thank you for reporting to Sedona the facts. Please let the blather just utter foolishly and blither away.

    You are “Sunshine” for Sedona.

  43. News Flash says:

And it gets even better! In the Oct 10th RRN we find a 1/4 page ad supporting Saint Scott J. Paid for entirely by Mike Ward – another seated Councilman!!! Huh???

Suggestion to the current and newly elected council folks; get everyone to agree that the City of Sedona is Up For Sale and then set a price and put our town on the market and see who the highest bidder is! No mention of what actions to improve or support or care for all of us and the businesses etc are necessary……..it is just all about who can afford to OWN this town.

News Flash = its time for the silent majority to take out, yet again, these wanna be’s and only Vote YES for Rio Robson!

  44. I voted for Rio in the last vote and now I find out that he wasn’t a registered voter until this past May. I called Coco County to be sure and was told that you have to be registered to vote in order to run for any office. Doesn’t sound like he’s very American to me.

Because of the great info on sedona eye, I’m not in favor of the COC and voted against home rule, Rio pitches how he’s one of us business owners and yet he just signed up as a chamber member I guess he did that just to get my support!

How can anyone trust or vote for Rio???????

  45. STAND UP says:

Come together. Vote for home grown.

    Vote for Rio!

    @News Flash Yes!

  46. Warren says:

    @ News Flash – NOT!

I hear you. Rio is a flawed candidate no doubt. To your list of flaws I’ll add that I find his emphasis on traffic as an major issue to be ridiculous. As a previous post pointed out, the traffic problems Sedona does have were government created anyway.

Additionally, Rio’s inclusion of a food recipe on his campaign brochure was also more ridiculousness and faux-folksy nonsense.

That said, he is NOT Scott Jablow. Nor does he have the endorsement of Sedona’s political establishment like Jablow does.

I was not going to vote for either candidate but the more I read about Jablow the more I realized I needed not to vote for Rio but against Jablow. The news that Mike Ward had placed an ad in the SRRN supporting Jablow pushed me over the edge. I will be holding my nose and voting for Rio.

  47. Tom G says:

Seems like all the blow hards on this site are wrong once again… Your all 0-3….Home Rule voted in….cliff loses and now Rio drops out of race and joins the C of C…The vocal minority loses once again…On to your next Hate item…

  48. AZ Voter says:

I understand that Rio Robson has decided to drop out of the race. Wise decision on his part!

  49. Warren says:

He’ll still be on the ballot. Send a message. Vote for him anyway.
