Jacob Lake Skeletal Remains Linked to 2013 Homicide

Coconino County Patrol MapSedona AZ (August 1, 2016) – On July 1, 2016, the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office in Arizona received a call from the Kane County (Utah) Sheriff’s Office advising that a rancher had located human skeletal remains between Fredonia and Jacob Lake, Arizona.

A local rancher was working his cattle range area south of State Highway 89A and located the remains, clothing, boots and a daypack under a tree.

Coconino County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the area and the rancher led them to the remains. Remnants of weathered clothing and a boot were still present, as was a daypack. A handgun was found under the remains. The skeletal remains appeared to have been there for quite some time, if not several years.

On April 30, 2013, the CCSO deputies and detectives responded to a wooded area north of Jacob Lake after Forest Service employees reported a suspicious vehicle apparently abandoned in the forest off SR 89A. It was determined the abandoned truck was stolen and wanted in connection with a current Glendale, Arizona, homicide investigation. The homicide suspect and a stolen vehicle had been listed as wanted, but the whereabouts of the suspect continued to be unknown.

Coconino County SheriffGlendale AZ Police detectives responded to the area in 2013, as well as the CCSO Search and Rescue unit and both entities conducted a search of the area. At the time, no further evidence was located.

In 2016, the daypack found with the skeleton contained a work shirt with a company name connected to the Glendale homicide. It is believed the remains may be that of the homicide suspect.

The investigation has been turned over to Glendale detectives. For questions about the Glendale Police Department’s case, contact the Glendale Police Department. For questions about the body discovery, contact the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, Commander Rex Gilliland, at 928-226-5025.
