Industry Says Smart Meter Consumers Profiled

Smart Meter National Grid

Smart Meter National Grid

Sedona AZ (May 23, 2014) The following is a letter to the SedonaEye.com editor:

Industry mouthpiece SmartGridNews finally admitted today that “smart” meters are surveillance devices. Of course they didn’t quite put it that bluntly. In fact, they celebrate the ability of utilities to know what appliances people use as another tool to help craft the wonderful world of the future.

Below is my letter to the Arizona Corporation Commission pointing out that industry has finally come out and admitted what I and others have been saying for years.

The link to the SmartGridNews article entitled, Now utilities can tell customers how much energy each appliance uses (just from the smart meter data), follows the letter.

Re: Docket # E-01345A-14-0113

Ladies and Gentlemen;

Here is breaking news. SmartGridNews has just come out of the closet and admitted what I and others have been saying all long: “Smart” meters are surveillance devices.

APS and utilities nationwide have been denying the surveillance capability of “smart” meters but here is one of the foremost “smart” meter cheerleaders in the world finally admitting the truth.

SmartGridNews calls such “smart” grid industry names as Telvent, Silver Spring Networks and Lockheed Martin its “major sponsors”. So of course the news story attempts to put a positive spin on the surveillance, hyping such nonsense as an “over 4% conservation [of energy] after just a few months”.

Wow, that means I might save four whole dollars and change on a one hundred dollar electrical bill. Where do I sign up to be spied on?

Enclosed is the SmartGridNews article, Now utilities can tell customers how much energy each appliance uses (just from the smart meter data).

Sincerely,

Warren Woodward

PS – In the article, note the creepy picture of a guy dressed in black and using binoculars. SmartGridNews is shameless to promote Peeping Toms as cool. Note also Orwellian phrasing such as “behavioral science“ and turning ratepayers into “willing partners“. It’s not a “smart” grid; it’s a sick grid.

You are destroying our children’s freedom by your lack of action to stand for your rights.

http://stopsmartmetersny.org/debunkingutility.html – DEBUNKING THE UTILITY INDUSTRY MYTH ABOUT SMART METER SAFETY: THE ANTENNA EFFECT

The utility industry’s argument that smart (AMR, ERT) meters are safe must be rejected, because they rely for proof of health and safety on FCC testing for radiofrequency (RF) interference, which is not a safety testing protocol.

The FCC testing for smart meters is done in an isolated laboratory, divorced from the context in which these meters are intended to be used, connected to the wiring in a home or business.

See the full report for compelling technical and empirical proof that, when these meters are used as intended, they cause an antenna effect, causing great harm to occupants inside their homes and businesses. When used as intended, smart meters that appear to be safe in the testing laboratory are lethal.

  5. In January, President Obama spoke about changes in the technology we use for national security purposes, and what they mean for our privacy broadly.

He launched a 90-day review of big data and privacy: how they affect the way we live, and the way we work — and how data is being used by universities, the private sector, and the government. As part of that review, we’ve already heard from leading privacy advocates and industry leaders, among others.

The White House released information on its 90 day request for feedback on the issue of “Big Data,” the industry that our utilities invented, along with our politicians, and are depending on participating in as a way out of their antiquated business models that are no longer working for them.

Please read this important news update regarding smart meters!! City staff will end smart meter project !!!

PORT ANGELES — City staff will begin negotiations on ending the contract with the contractor on the delayed “smart” meter project after a City Council vote Tuesday night.

Council members voted 5-1, with Councilmen Lee Whetham opposed and Patrick Downie absent, to authorize a “standstill” agreement with Atlanta-based Mueller Systems that would halt all work on the beleaguered smart electric and water meter project and start a 60-day clock for negotiating a mutual termination of the city’s contract with Mueller.

Council members also approved by the same vote a contract amendment not to exceed $140,000 with West Monroe Partners, the city consultant that evaluated the smart meter project in October, for technical support during the city’s contract termination negotiations with Mueller.

“They know where Mueller might have failed and has failed, and [that] gives us a lot stronger negotiating position,” City Public Works and Utilities Director Craig Fulton told council members Tuesday night.

In casting the sole no vote against both the agreement and the contract amendment, Whetham said he supported going to court over the $4.9 million smart meter project, which has been delayed by roughly 2.5 years.

The city declared Mueller in breach of contract in January citing a bevy of software integration issues between the city’s billing software and that of Mueller… read more at this link http://peninsuladailynews.com/article/20140603/NEWS/306039978/0/news/updated-8212-port-angeles-city-council-approves-action-to-end

NEUROSCIENTIST COMMENTS ON SCOPE OF ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SERVICES SMART METER STUDY

On May 30, Sedona Smart Meter Awareness (SSMA) received a copy of Dr. Olle Johansson’s comments submitted to the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS), about ADHS’ study being done to determine health effects from radio frequency radiation emitted by APS smart meters. SSMA is a local group informing the community about health, safety and privacy effects of smart meters.

Dr. Johansson, Associate Professor, Experimental and Dermatology Unit head, Department of Neuroscience at Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden is a world recognized authority in EMF radiation and health effects.

He commented in response to ADHS’ study parameters focusing on “human toxicology” and “limited to examining the transmission signals to see if they conform to federally approved guidelines.” ADHS notes that if the transmissions “exceed/deviate from allowable federal standards,” it will then research the literature, consult with its “CDC partners to see if there is any cause and effect relationship documented that would be detrimental to human health.” According to SSMA, FCC guidelines are not related to health effects.

Dr. Johansson observes the “consequences of chronic exposure to pulsed microwave exposure from smart meters is often denied…Exposure to electromagnetic fields not only may induce acute thermal effects to living organisms, but also non-thermal effects, the latter often after longer exposures. This has been demonstrated in a very large number of studies and includes cellular DNA-damage, disruptions and alternations of cellular functions like increases in intracellular stimulatory pathways and calcium handling, disruption of tissue structures like the blood-brain barrier, impact on vessel and immune functions, and loss of fertility . . . practically all animals and plants may be at stake.”

He urges that “the “precautionary principle” should be in effect before the introduction of new technology to the public. This was not done with smart meters.
