Imagine Sedona 2020 and Beyond

Sedona AZ (March 7, 2012) – As part of the process for the new Sedona Community Plan, City staff assembled planning teams to address community development ideas for the city. These teams, each given a specific area of concentration, met on February 10, 2012 to discuss the wide range of ideas for Sedona’s future development.

The teams are comprised of Sedona architects, planning and zoning commissioners, arts and culture commissioners, a parks and recreation commissioner, a housing commissioner, a sustainability commissioner, citizen steering committee members, sustainable building and rain water harvesting professionals, and regenerative ecological design students from the Ecosa Institute in Prescott, AZ.

The Imagine Sedona 2020 and Beyond planning teams purpose is to put design ideas on paper stemming from over seven hundred citizen comments received to-date from citywide public workshops. The teams will meet on a weekly basis until the beginning of May 2012 when ideas will be presented publicly at a community function.

The public is invited to attend a free half hour webinar on “Form-Based Codes for Small Towns” on Monday, March 26, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. in the Community Plan Room located at 1725 SR 89A, in the Vista del Norte building, west Sedona. The webinar is part of a community outreach program regarding the Sedona Community Plan update and will provide education on the application of a Form-Based Code (FBC) approach in Kingsburg, CA (pop. 12,000).

Form-based codes are used to facilitate a growth concept using compact, mixed-use development. For information on Form-Based Codes, visit formbasedcodes.org.  The webinar features Stephan Pellegrini who will discuss how Form-Based Codes can be utilized to address preservation, evolution, and growth in a small town.

Following the half hour webinar segment, there will be a discussion on the City of Flagstaff’s zoning ordinance re-write into an innovative hybrid zoning code that integrates form-based code elements with conventional zoning techniques. This discussion will be led by Roger Eastman, Zoning Code Administrator for the City of Flagstaff. Eastman had a 15-year broad-based planning career with the City of Sedona, completed the FBCI training and currently serves on the Code Council for FBCI.
