Hollywood Jim at Sedona’s Studio Live!

Whoa, whoa, folks! Me perform at Studio Live? If talented musically then I might be asked, so instead I was invited to the Studio Live Potluck Dinner held last Monday evening.

Studio Live is home to the Sedona Performers Guild located at 215 CoffeePot Drive right here in good old West Sedona. Not knowing what to expect other than food, I discovered much more than the groaning table of buffet-usual. I was welcomed to Studio Live by none other than its founder and President, Suzie Schomaker. Suzie has a warm smile and, hunch confirmed, is a New York native.

Ms. Schomaker founded the Sedona Performers Guild and Studio Live almost two years ago after recognizing the need for an outlet and venue for performing artists such as herself. The Sedona Performers Guild is totally funded by its membership–currently a fat 175 and growing fast artist base.

Suzie Schomaker isn’t alone in the Sedona Live hierarchy of talent; she runs the venue along with Program Director Rick Cyge and several volunteers: One passionate volunteer, Linda Colodner, set me straight with her “New York love of everything-Broadway” and her “soul” reason for being a volunteer…”it’s about the music and art.”

Studio Live and the Sedona Performers Guild are unique. No other venue exists quite like it in Sedona or the Verde Valley. Members have complete access to everything in Studio Live, including an awesome stage to perform with other like-minded musicians.

SedonaEye.com contributing writer, Hollywood Jim, and fan

The Sedona Performers Guild and Studio Live are more than just musicians, membership boasts actors and comedians. Get yourself to SPG and Sedona Live Improv Night for some serious Out and About fun and talent at its wildest!

The Sedona Performers Guild is also home to various workshops, most notably a song-writing workshop with Severin Browne, brother to famed singer-musician-recording artist Jackson Browne. Severin’s workshop is $20/SPG members and $30 for non members. (Membership to the SPG is only $8 a month! Can you beat that with a rainstick?) Don’t miss Studio Live’s Holiday Show on Saturday, December 18th, 2010 beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Suzie also tells me that SPG is working on events for 2011 that may include a jazz series, and other focused musical events: SPG is exploring the option of paying one price for an entire series. Can you imagine several nights of jazz for a “one price does it all”? I’m thinking Newport Jazz Festival right here in Sedona!

The mission statement for the Sedona Performers Guild is to “Lift up performers and give them a venue to perform.” In a past article I wrote that Sedona is home to many great talents, but Sedona is not only a home, it is a vortex! The talent that lives here is drawn here!

Find SPG and Studio Live online at www.studiolivesedona.com or www.sedonaperformersguild.org and, of course, you can call for more information 928-282-0549. Remember to check out the SedonaEye’s Calendar of Events daily. Get Out and About and give Hollywood Jim a Shout Out!

And last, but not least, the generous members of the Sedona Performers Guild are instrumental (pun intended) in supporting the Sedona Red Rock High School’s effort to put musical instruments into the hands of the less fortunate.

The joint SPG/RRHS goal is to procure instruments for students that will compliment the beauty and acoustical quality of the new Performing Arts Center. For more information about the Music Donation Program, please contact Dr. Mark Gorchesky at mka6393@npgcable.com or Suzie Schomaker at sedonaperformersguild@gmail.com.

  1. Severin Browne says:

    Concert on Friday January 14, 2011, 7:30pm, $18 Advance / $20 at the door.
    Songwriting Workshop on Saturday January 15, 2011, 1pm to 3pm, $25.

Studio Live, Home of the Sedona Performers Guild, 215 Coffeepot Drive, Sedona, AZ. Phone: 928-282-0549.

Singer-Songwriter Severin Browne was a recording artist and staff-songwriter at Motown Records in the 70’s. His two albums on Motown Records, “Severin Browne” released in 1973 and “New, Improved Severin Browne” released in 1974, both received good reviews and solid sales numbers. He has shared either stages or recording studios with his brother Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, J.D. Souther, Kenny Rankin, John Hartford, Kenny Edwards, Sloan Wainwright, Jennifer Warnes, The Kingston Trio, Delaney Bramlett, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGee, Freebo, James Lee Stanley, Penny Nichols, Country Joe & The Fish, and many more. His songs have been recorded by Thelma Houston, Colin Blunstone, Twiggy, Patti Dahlstrom, David Roth, Freebo, James Lee Stanley, Alfred Johnson, The Dillards, Elderlocke, and Pamela Stanley, who had a Disco hit with Severin’s “I Don’t Want To Talk About It”. Four of his songs were used in the film “Plan B” starring Jon Cryer. Severin also co-wrote two songs for the English release of the Japanese animated hit movie “My Friend Totoro” released in the US on Fox.

Severin’s two post-Motown CDs, “From The Edge of The World” released on Moo Records in 1966, and “This Twisted Road” self-released in 2001, also got great reviews. “From The Edge of The World” is now out of print, but “This Twisted Road” is currently available at http://www.cdbaby.com/severin, and individual downloads of songs from that CD can be purchased anywhere that digital downloads are sold. Severin is currently working on a new yet-to-be-titled CD.

“His guitar playing is incredible, technically brilliant but at the same time tasty and always appropriate to serving the song. Ultimately a night with Severin Browne is all about the songs, humorous and moving and as warm and accessible as the man himself.” Peter Krantz blog, 2009

“(Severin’s) melodies are catchy and yet often take unexpected turns that keep them interesting after repeated listenings, in fact I enjoy them more each time around.” Guntram Gudowius, Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange

“Severin’s songs and melodies are so memorable that I can recall the first time I heard each song: where I was, who I was with…” Judy Krueger, The Info Line

As a songwriting teacher, Severin has led songwriting workshops since 2001. His “Song Starting” workshops have led many to write very good songs. “I really appreciate his patience, and his knowledge. He finds the perfect way to explain something that turns on the light-bulbs!” says Leslie Beauvais, a guitar and songwriting student.

If you love good songs and rock solid performances, see Severin when he visits Sedona. He’ll be playing and singing solo.
