Helping Kids Succeed Arizona Style

Sedona AZ (August 24, 2011)-Now that the 2011-2012 school year is in session, attention to factors that help children succeed are being addressed by Arizona state, county and local school districts.

Believing that children need more than just school to be successful and that children need involved families and community, the Arizona School Board Association has scheduled a two-and-a-half-hour meeting at the West Sedona School, 570 Posse Grounds Road, on August 29 2011 at 6:30 p.m. for interested educators, parents and citizens to discuss how to help children succeed. The community-at-large is asked to attend to provide common sense input and support.

The Arizona School Board Association meeting will be moderated by Derek Peterson (www.helpingkidssucceedarizonastyle.org  & http://icar-us.com ). More detailed information about this statewide program initiative can be found in the Fall 2010 issue of the Arizona School Board Association Journal at http://issuu.com/asba/docs/final_22259_fall_journal/1 .

Sedona Oak Creek School Board President, Karen McClelland, who also serves as Arizona School Board Association’s Yavapai County Director, is a vocal supporter of the Arizona statewide initiative to help kids succeed.

“Conventional wisdom states that children and youth need one positive supportive adult in their lives. And, while this is partially true, it is just not true enough,” McClelland explained. “Children and youth need more. They need caring, supportive adults in their lives. One supportive adult is a good start, and one is not enough to ensure success and achievement. We are looking for a personal village for every child. When the community is engaged in educating and preparing our children, each child will be nurtured by a web of support, anchored by at least five caring adults. The benefit of having at least five adults involved in the developmental ecology of a young person is self-evident and quantifiable.”

“Come and discuss how we can create  this web of support in Yavapai and Coconino counties and bring together all parts of the community that have an interest in educating and supporting our children,” added McClelland.
