Amy Beth Davis and dog reported missing in Village of Oak Creek, Sedona, Arizona

Grandmother Shayna Tovah issued the following statement on Facebook which the SedonaEye.com published September 19, 2013, at 7:57 in the evening:

For those who knew Amy Beth – Amy Beth Davis’ body has been discovered. She has dropped her robe. There is finally closure for friends and family. My prayers and deepest sympathy goes out to family and friends. She was a wonderful being who shared and gave to those she touched. She shared her gifts with our Earth Dance8 family years ago, her leather work, drum songs, and smiling face. Amy Beth you will be remembered as you were. May you find peace where you are now.

In the official sheriff’s office release:  Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded late afternoon Thursday, September 19, 2013, to kayakers reporting a body in Oak Creek and found the body of a woman floating in the creek. Neighbors in the area, off of East Wing Drive, on the south side of Lower Red Rock Loop Road had reported a foul odor in the area prior to the discovery. The Yavapai County Medical Examiner’s Office will confirm the woman’s identity.

Original story:

Sedona AZ (September 16, 2013) – On September 12, 2013, at approximately 8:00 in the evening, a friend of 47-year-old Amy Beth Davis reported concerns that Davis was missing. Earlier in the day, the friend learned Davis was despondent and had requested a welfare check at her home in the 100 block of Rainbow Lane, Village of Oak Creek, Sedona, Arizona. A deputy did find Davis at home and spoke to her about her friend’s concern. She indicated that she would follow-up with the friend, but never did so.

A YCSO deputy returned to Davis’ home shortly after the friend’s 8 PM call. The deputy checked her residence, the neighborhood, and nearby Oak Creek where Davis normally walks her dog, but she was not located. Cell phone tracking was also unsuccessful.

Davis is described as 5’7″ tall, 130 pounds with hazel eyes and reddish hair.

The following day, a YCSO Rescue 1 helicopter flew the target area while search teams, including search dogs, canvassed the neighborhood and a large stretch of Oak Creek. Teams also checked trailheads and swimming areas, but Davis could not be found.

Deputies distributed missing person flyers to neighbors and hikers in the vicinity. Just before 6 PM on Saturday evening (YCSO UPDATE – CORRECTION – FRIDAY NOTIFICATION BY RESIDENT OF DAVIS BACKPACK FOUND SEPTEMBER 12*see comments below), a resident reported finding a backpack along Oak Creek which contained items belonging to Davis. Search teams went to the spot where the backpack was located, but Davis was nowhere to be found.

That same day Davis’ dog, Chasta, was spotted on Disney Lane in the VOC. Search teams permitted the dog to walk freely hoping it would lead them to Davis, but the dog failed to do so.

On Sunday, the search effort continued along with flyovers by Rescue 1, but again Davis could not be located. While search efforts continue on Monday, YCSO is seeking anyone who might have information regarding Amy Beth Davis to call 928-771-3260/911 immediately.

Citizens can contact the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office with information or questions at 928-771-3260.

The current in the creek was very strong on the 13th! Real white water. Could the dog have been caught up in it? Would she have tried to go in after him? She would not have left that dog and just walked off, or even harmed herself. And would someone have approached her with the dog? The dog was found in a neighborhood down stream. Could she have lost the dog? Why was she distraught? Was it over the dog? If she tried to cross the creek, or go into the water on the 13th, or if the dog had, it would have been a very strong current! It would have been dangerous. For both of them. I went looking around down there and down stream from her home there have not been any searches. It’s all covered with no trespassing signs, thick with underbrush, and no signs of a search party or search dogs having passed through. The ground is still solidified mud from when the river creek rose on the 12th & 13th. No disturbances. So it couldn’t have been searched. That creek area needs searched, down current from her home, on all that private land, and underbrush. If she went after the dog she could have been caught up in the current.

Gail, what you are saying makes a lot of sense. You have made some good suggestions…hope the YCSO follows up on it…

  21. Search efforts continued today without success. Deputies remain in contact with family and friends eager for any leads as to Davis’ whereabouts. Her dog, “Chasta,” is in the care of a friend.

Clarification — Deputies last contacted Davis on Thursday morning, September 12, 2013, during a welfare check requested by a friend. Davis told the deputy she was fine and he referred her to a counseling professional. Davis completed a phone conversation with the counselor in the deputy’s presence with no other indications she was at risk. Davis also agreed to meet with her concerned friend later that day but never did.

After 8 PM, deputies returned to the Davis home at her friend’s request, but she was not there. Deputies searched the neighborhood and Oak Creek area, but could not find her.

On Friday (September 13), the ground search continued and intensified over the weekend with the aid of search and rescue teams and helicopter flyovers. It was Friday when deputies were notified a resident had taken backpack home they found near Oak Creek the previous day. Deputies examined the contents and confirmed the property belonged to Davis. The search was then concentrated in the area where the backpack had been found, but no additional clues were discovered.

Yesterday, deputies continued ground search efforts looking for clues in the Oak Creek area where water levels were now subsiding. This operation continued today, Tuesday, without any sign of Davis. YCSO continues to encourage calls from any with information on Davis’ whereabouts.

Just found out today about Amy’s death…I’m stunne!!. She was a beautiful soul. I had the pleasure of meeting her through a friend & I stayed at her home around 8 or 9 years ago. At that time, she was healthy, working, and sharing her gifts of her love for nature, psychology, soul journeys, sweat tent spiritual journeys, her spiritual life and work. She was so giving and loving and evolved and so generous with her time and offering herself to make my stay with her so meaningful and wonderful. I was just about to contact her and introduce a family member to her, so they could connect, as I felt Amy had so much to offer in terms of healing and spiritual richness. My heart goes out to Amy and her family and friends. Glad to know that Chasta was being cared for,….as Amy loved her dog so much. God Bless Amy and it is my hope that she is in a better place now. Love you, Amy (sorry I lost contact with you). Good bye for now, Carole (from CA)
