Sedona AZ (November 26, 2013)Harley McGuire, SedonaEye.com star pet columnist just had to share this gifting story sent by Leon and Marmalade, his Sedona four paws up pals a.k.a. Those Cool Ginger Cats. Harley hasn’t laughed this hard since his mom did…ooppss…back to Leon and Marmalade’s story:

Leon and Marmalade are always trying to find lovely gifts to give their owners. Most of the time they are quite successful having bestowed a plethora of lizards, several birds, a small rabbit and even a baby snake but this past week while trying to deliver another wonderful present, the two were thwarted by a moronic animal’s efforts to escape their attempts at making him a gift  – because said animal planned to eat them out of house and home.

Leon and Marmalade conveniently have an enclosed outdoor run that they are able to access anytime they wish; they cannot leave this enclosure but smaller animals may come to visit. On this particular day a chipmunk happened by and the fun began.

Leon invited the chipmunk into the house to play. Once all three were inside they began running around, but the chipmunk did not play fair; he ran beneath and behind furniture where neither cat could follow. Fortunately one of the owners was home, and while this spoiled the surprise of what gift She was getting, the cats were grateful for her assistance in getting that present to come out from beneath the desk, then the couch, then from behind several large pieces of furniture but, alas, the chipmunk managed to run behind the dishwasher where even She could not reach it.

Thus the vigil began. At first both cats stood watch on either side of the dishwasher but eventually they had to begin taking shifts throughout the night and into the next day. They were continuing this vigil when the owners went away for a few days and they knew this was their opportunity to coax the chipmunk out and leave it as a gift – laid out beautifully upon her vanity (as they had done with most of their gifts) as a surprise when She returned.

Once again the chipmunk would not comply. Their food did work to entice the gift from beneath the dishwasher however Leon and Marmalade soon learned the little rodent was very greedy! They managed to get him out of his hidey-hole but instead of continuing to play, the chipmunk attempted to eat ALL of their food by crawling up into their food dispenser.

This is when the gift became especially problematic – because the cats knew they wouldn’t be able to present him in their accustomed way – how was She going to find him “in there” – and was he really going to eat all of their food in the meantime!?

Well, apparently the amount of food was too much for the greedy chipmunk because he apparently ate himself to death – or something – and alas because he was still hidden, Leon’s and Marmalade’s planned beautiful presentation was not possible.

Their owner is a very keen lady and upon her return She eventually smelled that there was a gift but She was unsure where it was. Several days of sniffing and hunting ferreted out the chipmunk’s hiding place and She at last received her gift, albeit not in the cats’ usual fashion which was a great disappointment to them.

She retrieved her gift and, as always, had Him take her gift away.

Leon and Marmalade don’t know where She and Him keep all those wonderful gifts, but were ecstatically happy She found this latest one while it was still wonderfully odiferous!

Leon and Marmalade also confided to Harley McGuire it is time to begin looking for a new gift for her. After all, it is the holiday season!

  3. Donna says:

Well I know that these “gifts” are both great fun for cats and an honor they bestow on us, but I’d just as soon take a nice cuddle while watching football over “odiferous” gifts LOL!!!

  4. Chip'n Dale says:

Harley, with mom being gone for several days, if we could we would not even think of giving her that nice a gift…If getting outside were an option the gift we would share would be something that stinks before it is found.

Thank you ginger cats for the funny story. Hugs and Hisses C’n D

  5. Dear Harley McGuire,

It is with sadness that we tell you of the passing of Cole and Mandy, sometimes commentators to your stories. Both crossed to the land of no electric fences and dog collars to the great meadowland of freedom to run. Cole will play and lounge in the sun all day now and Mandy will run and never have to come home earlier than she wants. They will miss their families forever but know they are held rock solid within hearts.

Cole was always grateful that his family rescued him and that his family’s best friends next door rescued his sister Mandy so they could grow up together after being found as newborns tossed in a box beside the highway. No longer in pain, Cole will be romping with his twin sister Mandy who followed him last Monday, two short weeks later, to the greatest dog meadow in the sky. They couldn’t be without each other ever.

In four paws up loving hearts, Harley, please remember it is good to have you advocating for those that need rescuing. Cole and Mandy and their families shared 13 happy years living side by side. Thank you, Harley McGuire, on behalf of Cole and Mandy.

    Signed,
Cole’s and Mandy’s Friend with tears of sadness at the news of their loss

  6. Goodbye Cole and Mandy:

My tail is at half-mast as an expression of sadness for your loss. However, reading the story of their life tickled my tummy ‘cuz in a way it speaks of my own life in my forever home for the past six years.

As sad as your words are they reflect the comfort and joy you all shared during your time together here on earth. It’s a good thing that you take comfort in knowing they have now crossed over that Rainbow Bridge where they will be waiting for you.

    Sadly but lovingly,
    Harley McGuire :-(

  8. Now you know why our Mrs. & Him do not have a doggie door. Obviously, they’re not into receiving gifts but they do receive lots of sloppy kisses & snuggles on a daily basis. During Channukah, they received 8 solid days of this. Stay happy & healthy dear Harley
