Grand Canyon North Rim State Highway to Close

grand canyon mapSedona AZ (November 18, 2014) The Arizona Department of Transportation will close State Route 67 between Jacob Lake (US 89A) and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park for the winter season beginning Monday, December 1, 2014.

The road may  close earlier if heavy snowfall occurs in the area prior to the announced closure date. ADOT does not clear snow from SR 67 during the winter because visitor accommodations at the North Rim are closed. The highway reopens each spring, usually around mid-May.

Arizona US 89A will remain open at the junction with SR 67.

Before heading out on the roads, drivers are encouraged to call 511 or visit ADOT’’s Traveler Information Center at az511.gov for the latest highway conditions around the state. The website features camera images along state highways that give drivers a glimpse of weather conditions in various regions.

Be prepared for winter driving by checking for weather conditions prior to your travels on Arizona roadways. Follow the SedonaEye.com for the latest Arizona highways information. You may also contact ADOT’s Senior Community Relations Officer by phone at 602-501-4899 for updates.

Protect the Grand Canyon For All Americans

The New York Times recently spotlighted two major development proposals that would devastate the canyon’s wild nature, beauty, and overall health. These projects would harm a national treasure, a wild place essential to our identity as Americans.

The first is a proposed tram that would take up to 10,000 people per day from the canyon rim down to the river. That project alone could turn the confluence of the Colorado and Little Colorado Rivers into a cross between a strip mall and an amusement park. Second, there is a major housing and hotel development proposal that would deplete groundwater and harm important springs and seeps that keep the Colorado River healthy. And third, there is the ongoing challenge of pollution from uranium mining seeping into creeks and threatening the Colorado River’s clean water.

Take action today. Sign the petition found at the above link opposing this unprecedented level of development.
