Sedona AZ (September 6, 2013)Whitney Cunningham of Flagstaff, Arizona, is the new president of the State Bar of Arizona Board of Governors. As president, he leads the largest professional association in Arizona with more than 22,000 members.

Cunningham is a longtime member of the State Bar of Arizona’s Board of Governors. He began serving on the board in 2002, and started serving in a leadership role in 2009. Under his leadership, Cunningham will advance the Bar’s efforts of providing access to justice, a goal outlined in its mission statement.

“I will use this year to continue advancing the State Bar of Arizona’s efforts in making access to justice more affordable to the poor and vulnerable,” stated Cunningham. “I will also focus on defending our courts against inadequate funding and efforts that attempt to politicize the judicial process,” he added.

“Whitney is the right person at the right time to lead our organization through the many challenges facing our profession,” said John Phelps, CEO and Executive Director of the State Bar of Arizona. “His experience as a successful small firm lawyer coupled with his strategic understanding of our legal institutions brings the right mix of empathy for our members and commitment to serving the public.”

Whitney Cunningham takes over as president from Amelia Craig Cramer who led the State Bar of Arizona during the past year. Cramer will remain as part of the Bar’s leadership team as its Immediate Past-Chair.

New officers joining Cunningham on the Board of Governors are President-Elect Richard T. Platt, First Vice President Bryan B. Chambers, Second Vice President Lisa Loo, Secretary-Treasurer Alex B. Vakula, and Young Lawyer Division President Alyse Meislik.

Whitney Cunningham is a partner in the law firm of Cunningham Mott PC which he formed with his wife and law partner, Jennifer Mott in 2005. He began his legal career at the law firm of Aspey Watkins & Diesel PLLC in 1993, where he worked until 2005. He received his undergraduate degree from Northern Arizona University and his law degree from the Georgetown University Law Center. While at Georgetown, he served as Editor-in-Chief of The Georgetown Law Journal, and following graduation he served as law clerk to the Hon. George H. Revercomb, Judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. He has served on the Board of Governors of the State Bar of Arizona since 2002. He is the board’s sole elected representative for Apache, Coconino, Mohave and Navajo counties.

image001 (3)The State Bar of Arizona Board of Governors oversees the policy making and operation of the organization. The Board is comprised of 30 people:  four non-attorney public members appointed by the Board; three at-large members appointed by the Arizona Supreme Court; 19 attorney members elected by fellow Bar members in their district; and four ex-officio members (immediate past president and the deans of Arizona’s three law schools).

The Board meets a minimum of nine times each year.

The State Bar of Arizona is a non-profit organization that operates under the supervision of the Arizona Supreme Court. The Bar includes approximately 17,000 active attorneys and provides education and development programs for the legal profession and the public. Since 1933 the Bar and its members have been committed to serving the public by making sure the voices of all people in Arizona are heard in our justice system.
