FDA Warns of Coffee Supplement Health Risk

Saturday, the Food and Drug Administration urged consumers to stop using the Magic Power Coffee product being marketed as a sexual aphrodisiac.  The FDA says that that Magic Power Coffee may dangerously lower blood pressure because it contains a chemical that could interact with some prescription drugs.  Blood pressure drops are recognizable by light-headedness and or dizziness caused when the brain receives an insufficient blood supply.

The FDA did say that no adverse incidents associated with the product have been brought to its attention to-date.  “Because this product is an instant coffee labeled as an ‘all natural dietary supplement,’ consumers may assume it is harmless and poses no health risk,” said Deborah M. Autor, director of FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, Office of Compliance. “In fact, Magic Power Coffee can cause serious harm.”

Magic Power Coffee is sold on Internet sites by independent distributors. Consumers and health care professionals should report problems immediately to the FDA’s MedWatch program at 800-FDA-1088.   www.fda.gov/medwatch/report.htm
