Fairman Resigns from Citizens Clean Elections Commission

cleanPHOENIX AZ (November 20, 2012)Jeffrey L. Fairman will resign from the Citizens Clean Elections Commission effective December 31, 2012. He has served as a commissioner for the past six years.

Fairman, a Democrat from Pinal County, was appointed to a five-year term in 2007 by then-Gov. Janet Napolitano. His term expired January 31, 2012, but he continued to serve while a replacement was sought. Fairman is the first Pinal County resident to serve on the commission.

Fairman announced his decision at the November 15, 2012, meeting of the commission.

“The Commission and its staff appreciate Mr. Fairman’s service over the past six years,” said CEC Chair Lori Daniels. “We thank him for his hard work and positive contributions to both the Commission and Clean Elections.”

Anyone interested in filling the position should apply to the Office of Boards and Commissions.

The law governing the Citizens Clean Elections Commission requires that “no more than two members of the commission shall be members of the same political party. No more than two members of the commission shall be residents of the same county.”

Of the remaining four commission members, two are from Maricopa County and two are from Pima County. Two of the commissioners are Republicans, one is a Democrat and the other is an Independent. The person replacing Commissioner Fairman will have to be from a county other than Maricopa or Pima, and can be from any party other than Republican or Independent.

The Citizens Clean Elections Act, passed by voters in 1998, created a new campaign financing system that provides full public funding to qualified candidates who agree to abide by the Citizens Clean Elections Commission guidelines. Candidates for statewide and legislative offices are eligible to participate in the public funding program.

To qualify for funding, participating candidates gather $5 qualifying contributions from constituents who are registered voters. Participating candidates also adhere to strict spending and contribution limits and agree to attend required workshops and debates. For more information, visit the Citizens Clean Elections Commission website at www.azcleanelections.gov.
