Sedona AZ (July 28, 2014) – Attention all you silly little people who would dare go against Home Rule, the Alternative Expenditure Limitation!
A letter from Sedona City Council candidate Jon Thompson, in the City of Sedona Publicity Pamphlet for the August 26, 2014 election, states “you are but a vocal minority of Sedona.” Does that, therefore, mean you really neither exist nor matter? Do you not also have the option to vote your choice for Mayor and Council Members?
Is it true you “believe that Sedona is like a teenager with a minimum wage job who just got a credit card and is buying lots of expensive stuff he’ll never be able to pay for?” So says Mr. Thompson.
Disagree with Mr. Thompson and shame on you. Apparently his version of a “vocal minority” really has no voice at all – when, from another vantage point, they just might have a more accurate assessment of the state of affairs than does Jon Thompson.
If the current shortfall of funding, for apparently foolish things such as public safety projects (sidewalks, drainage) in favor of outlandish funding for the Chamber of Commerce, Film Festival, and a growing assortment of myriad “collaborative associations” doesn’t exemplify appeasement to spoiled brats, some of whom don’t even hold minimum wage jobs, then what does?
A rising groundswell of vocal discord with current Home Rule has impacted the 2014 City Council and Mayor election
Interesting, too? Of the eight letters submitted supporting Home Rule, two are from the candidates for Mayor, Cliff Hamilton and Sandy Moriarty; three are from City Council candidates, Scott M. Jablow, Angela LeFevre, and Jon Thompson; and two are from present City Council members, Barbara Litrell and Michael Ward. All are active politicians, devoutly believing they know what’s best, and that they are the voices of authority without responsibility for consideration or respect to those who think differently than they.
But wait.
The Chamber of Commerce advocates a Yes vote on Home Rule
There are eight letters of support for Home Rule. Who, pray tell, is missing from the above list?
Well, of course and why not, also throwing in a chest-thumping rah, rah! letter for Home Rule is none other than Jennifer Wesselhoff, President and CEO of the Sedona Chamber of Commerce.
A financial boon for the Chamber should not be ignored by any means, since surely it represents the not-so-silent majority who consistently show up at council meetings with open palms for more money. Are they, in fact, the ones being handed the no-limit City credit card at the expense of the alleged “vocal minority” of Sedona?
Not only that, Ms. Wesselhoff begins her letter by stating, “We all agree that Sedona is a special place.” Now who is it that gave her license to speak for everyone, as in “we all agree?” Or is it simply because she hasn’t even a concept that the little people – who would dare to speak up about their opposition to Home Rule – even exist?
Ballots for the Sedona City elections are in the mail
Let us not overlook that six brave souls from the alleged “vocal minority” did dare to exercise their rights and submit their own letters. Their names are Julianna Stewart, Anthony M. Tonsich, Henry Twombly, Joe DeSalvo, Dana Harold Varney and Terrie Frankel. These Sedona registered voters also provided factual backup to justify reasons for preferring to vote against Home Rule at this time and, therefore, expressed their opinions.
Is that reason for a “shame on you” moment?
Of course the end of the story will not be known until the magical date of August 26, 2014, at which time the votes will be counted and the results announced.
Will Jon Thompson be proven correct in his assessment? Are those crying out against Home Rule the “vocal minority?”

Thank you for pointing out the great new look at the King’s Ransom. Now if we could only remodel the inner workings at City Hall, white wash the entire process, and eliminate the tainted association with the likes of Steve Segner, Lodging Council, Chamber of Commerce and rid ourselves of those council members enabling the disgrace, maybe Sedona might regain a positive image from the inside out.
Listen up candidates for City Council. Cliff Hamilton knows what the story is and the march against him in progress from his adversaries. Smear tactics is the best they can do.
King’s Ransom, you have set a fine example. Hopefully others will catch on. We do not need more arrogant officials like the present mayor or the council candidate who is the initial subject of this article.
No on Home Rule. Yes for Hamilton and O’Donnell.

I have always been a supporter of your comments but not on this one. I understand your feelings about those who were supported by segner. I’d rather move to cottonwood vs. voting for that stage coach guy O’Donnell. To put someone like him in office would be just as much of a disservice to our city as it would to have the ones that are supported by segner. Same results just different reasons.

You made my day! In a most kind and gentle manner you disagreed with me on a political issue and, whoever you are, I consider your method of doing so an act of classy disagreement.
All too often on Sedona Eye readers who disagree respond with ferocious attacks on those in opposition of their views. Therefore, I again applaud you for being delicate and agreeing to disagree in an amicable fashion.
Unless my writings are slanted towards editorializing and/or commentary, I do my best to remain unbiased. It wasn’t my intention to make my own political views public but, the same as others, every so often occasions arise to push us over the edge.
Again, and speaking only for myself, regardless of the outcome I will say “Amen & Hallelujah” when August 27th arrives. (And today is only the 4th of the month.) Oops, forgot we still must endure campaigning for Council Members until November. Oh well, at least the Mayor race will be decided. One out of four ain’t too bad!

You’re bitching about a personal email endorsement sent by Steve Segner of candidates that he has chosen for whatever the reason. This is his opinion to suggest to his MEMBERS who THEY may consider voting for. Even as the SLC head honcho, he has the right to endorse whoever he chooses and in the US of A, he can send that information to anyone that he so chooses. In the same light, the recipients of that email can choose to ignore, not agree with or run with Segners opinions.
In case you all forget, our children are overseas fighting so that this great country of ours can have the right to FREE SPEECH. Don’t like it, that too bad.
Is there any one person on this site who hasn’t or will not send even 1 email or call 1 friend to suggest who that person should or should not vote for? Come on all of you SedonaEye followers, raise your hands! Yah, I bet there’s not one.
How about any one person who has received a call from a neighbor or friend asking for advice or suggestions about the campaign and give the info asked for? Anyone care to raise their hand. I don’t see any.

Wow, Cindi Jacobson. Recommending choices of candidates is one thing but do you really believe suggesting smear campaigns to get them elected is appropriate? How about backtracking to “A Real Flat Lander” in the older comments and read Steve Segner’s suggestions for getting a background on Cliff Hamilton. In other words dig up dirt, and then some nonsense about bringing in the T-Party or whatever it takes in order to get his girl “Sand” elected?
Segner’s entire campaign is to have those elected that will continue giving excessive amounts of public money to the Chamber of Commerce and Lodging Council which most of is being spent to promote the Chamber itself (not City of Sedona) and businesses outside City Limits which do not collect city taxes and therefore don’t contribute to the City tax base.
When you recommend your choices of candidates do you also include the suggestion to smear the reputations of competition in order to have your favorites elected?
My dander really got raised when I received a email from Steve Segner and several emails from friends who sent me Steve Segner’s latest diatribe…..
Oh my, lordy, lordy – and here we go again with the words of the President of the Sedona Lodging Council, Steve Segner, in a Paid Advertisement to RRN: it is “FROM THE DESK OF STEVE SEGNER. dated August 4, 2014. and reads as follows and this is a word for word quote:
Fellow Sedonans, In the last few weeks I have received numerous phone calls and emails asking, “Who are you going to vote for in the Sedona mayoral race?”
On the surface, this is not an easy question to answer. Both candidates, Sandy Moriarty and Cliff Hamilton are past council members and are well respected in Sedona.
When I spoke with Cliff several weeks ago, I asked him about the possible installation of parking meters in Uptown as part of the comprehensive solution to it’s traffic problems and he commented “I will follow the wishes of the merchants!”
I asked what about the other 8,000 people in town? “Don’t their needs and votes also count? But he says he would follow the wishes of the people involved.
I can respect his opinion, even if I do not agree.
Since then, I have done a little research and found out that Cliff was a leader in the campaign and effort for Sedona to “Take over ownership of State Route 89A from ADOT”. He actually wanted the city to take ownership and financial responsibility for 89A.
That is ok, too!. He has every right to push his own agenda, except he was on the loosing side of this issue. Over 70% of Sedona said “NO!” Sedona did not want to own and maintain an expensive state highway.
So much for listening to and being in tune with the “will of the people”.
Sandy is a long time, 42 year resident of Sedona. She was one of our initial council persons when we incorporated in 1988. I have found Sandy to be a good listener and a fair-minded team player.
Sandy fought the efforts of Hamilton and others to take ownership of State Route 89A and stood with majority of the voters in Sedona who agreed with her.
So that is my answer, it’s “Sandy for Mayor!”

So, my fellow “Flatlanders” – as he politely calls us when in reality he is calling us “dumb-shits” – what do you think of his newest attempt to skew or screw with reality?
Took some time to revisit the 89A ownership issue (Let The People Vote) and was unable to find Sandy Moriarty’s name involved Anywhere – not for or against and she never gave a penny to that cause! Revisited Cliffs solid stance against 89A and respect that as he always stood out in the open and never once misrepresented his stance on that issue..
Also took some time to go back to see Mr. Segner’s association with the (Regional) Chamber and re-watched him on the City website saying —-where he said: just give them (Chamber ) and us (Lodging Council) money and raise the Bed Tax by .5% and “trust us, “trust us, and on and on…..think he was really saying………….and We will bring you rainbows and ponies and roses and money – just all the ethereal and un-factual crap that he and the Chamber and Lodging Council promised..
Yet now it seems, to this Flatlander, that he (Steve Segner) is swimming uphill as he is trying to grab on to some measure of credibility………..a measure of credibility I simply can not find.
Will someone please explain how this man, Steve Segner, manages to have so much self-imposed say-so in the City of Sedona when, in fact, he resides in Oak Creek Canyon.
Sure, he collects bed taxes at El Portal, a business within the City Limits. However, when he uses his canyon estate as a competitive venue for weddings and receptions, it’s mega tax dollars lost to the City of Sedona.
This man quite possibly has finagled a way to register to vote in City Elections but isn’t that still illegal when he actually does, in fact, live “up the creek?” And the City Council appears to worship the ground both he and Jennifer Wesselhoff walk on, no matter where it’s located.
Such a display of aggressive arrogance from all concerned with the ongoing Chamber/Lodging scam for city tax money should be stopped. Suggestion: Do not vote for those on “their” team, please.
Segner fails to mention Cliff Hamilton wasn’t the only one lobbying for city to own the highway. Scott Jablow who had a letter of support in the Voter’s Info Pamphlet re SR89A Referendum & Initiative. Attention Sedona Lodging Council supporters – Segner says Jablow gets a NO vote then. Who else was pro-road?
Sure, Jon Thompson can, in writing, label and slam those of us who at this point in time object to Home Rule as being the “Vocal Minority.” But the audacity he displays at council forums claiming that if elected he will be a peace maker and bring people together? I think not. Beware of those speaking with forked tongue. Phoney baloney.

Along with Scott Jablow (and others) City Council Candidate Angela LeFevre had a letter in that same publication in support of the City acquiring ownership of the entire portion of State Route 89A within Sedona City Limits.
Although it didn’t come to pass, I ask you all to assess the value of such a position considering the major disaster of the less than one mile uptown of the State Highway presently acquired and owned by the City due to a previous agreement with ADOT. It’s a mess!! Always has been since day one of that bright idea.
And there are those still wondering why residents were in an uproar and overwhelmingly overturned the decision of an ill-informed City Council who were obviously oblivious to the true Will of the People?
For the sake of moving forward, is it possible to leave that Sedona saga in the past, where it belongs, with the probably absurd notion that City officials learned a lesson? Learning from past mistakes is one thing. Dredging them up to detract from major current issues might have similar or worse repercussions.
NO on Home Rule.

SPECIAL CITY COUNCIL MEETING WEDNESDAY AUG. 13TH 3:00 PM for the purpose of:
“AB 1835 Discussion/possible direction concerning the need for new legislation/ordinances to deter false advertising and deceptive and misleading commercial signs. This item is prompted primarily by complaints from tourists and visitors about being misled by signs on businesses claiming to be museums, tourist information centers or visitor centers.”
How about starting with setting an example?
Since it functions under a city contract for service, financed with tax revenue provided from hard working city businesses, including the taxes paid for renting/leasing commercial locations, change the uptown “Visitor’s Center” to reflect that it is the “Sedona City Visitor’s Center.”
The current identification indicates it’s the Chamber of Commerce Visitor’s Center. That is dishonest, misleading, and inappropriate.
Either change the name or cancel the contract.

Sedona is losing tourist by the hundreds of thousands per year who head to Jerome and Old Town where they will not be hawked for the kill by relentless time share tour operators.
You want to improve your business bottom line?
Make those timeshare companies who do NOT pay their fair share of taxes to the city post what they really are.
They are also subbing out jobs to third party vendors from out of state, eliminating local workers benefits and more state taxes.
Diamond Resorts activity departments for example.
They also are starting an out of state food delivery concierge service to deliver food to the timeshare rooms, there goes the local restaurant business.
Start paying attention chamber and city of Sedona…….

Some may try to discourage you from voting, saying that your vote has no meaning because the agreement between ADOT and the City are void and the money is gone. This is Not true!
The filing of the petition for referendum had the effect of freezing the City’s ability to move forward with the route transfer. We are exercising our constitutional rights in this election. The process has stopped until we the people approve or disapprove our Council’s decision.
A YES vote ensures that we will have the potential of creating a roadway that is beautiful, safe, user friendly, and compatible with our natural beauty. A YES note means that what is done with OUR road and the 32 foot right of way on either side of the roadway may be designed for the best interests of Sedona. It’s Our road, our choice.
ADOT has already told us that we will own the road one way or another and that, after the community vote, they are open to negotiating a “new route transfer agreement.” Translation: if you vote YES, ADOT will come back to the bargaining table and discuss a new agreement and financial package. They want to get rid of the road. They are seeking to turn back state highways going through cities all over Arizona. Support our council’s decision to take over our main street on our terms, not ADOT’S.

I can only surmise that Scott, in his current council race, continues to dumb us all down as he has forgotten that over 70% voted against Him on the ownership issue of owing 89A and his further issues of what he supposedly will do for all of us……please vote No on Scott and Vote NO on Home rule…….and remember that Scott Jablow wants a Yes vote on Home Rule – so he can continue to just wilily nilly spend like it was free money.
Money isn’t free – unless you sit on city council and don’t respect our Health, Safety and Welfare issues.
@ Vote Counter Thank you for bringing up very valid points and reminding us that money isn’t free. That is something everyone has forgotten. Those outside the city limits line up for free Sedona City money.
Spending more then you bring in, not fiscally responsible. Creating a budget that spends more than your income, bad business. Stating the City is in good financial standing, not true. Not taking care of Health, Safety and Welfare issues for the incorporated area, disrespectful. Evidently someone will pay and we know who that will be, us the residents in the City limits.
For those of you renting don’t think you won’t pay, you will as the landlords will role any cost they have onto your rents. Stand up and vote.

To A Real “Flatlander”:
Wasn’t it Steve Segner, President of the ‘Sedona’ Lodging Council, who talked the City Council into raising Sedona’s bed tax by one-half percent during a down economy?
As the ‘Sedona’ Lodging Council is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, in my opinion its tax exempt status is in jeopardy by Mr. Segner’s involvement in a political campaign.
This “special” council meeting to discuss misleading commercial signs appears to be another attempt by the Chamber of Commerce to lock in their exclusive right to operate the only “official” visitor’s center with their name on it but paid for with city tax revenue. By eliminating other businesses that would dare to even create the illusion of being competitive by using “Visitor Information” just hinders the Chamber’s scam to promote only their members and with public money at that.
Isn’t it outrageous for the city to consider even more discriminating limitations to City of Sedona businesses? Why wouldn’t they instead offer the opportunity for what they imply are questionable business practices to bid for the contract to operate what allegedly is the “city’s official visitor’s center?” That should have been done years ago. Stop making it impossible for Sedona businesses to keep their doors open.
Here is the deal.
For the last five or six years, sedona pines and diamond resorts have been the main time share marketers of our guests. This year Wyndham and Hyatt are marketing off property, as well as two new”vacation clubs” of which one is owned by a local restaurant owner.
This existing problem is now amplified by four more and you have not begun to hear those complaints.
Make them. Put the name of their business and the word timeshare on their signs.

Who is the new restaurant owner owing “vacation clubs”? Al Spector? or…who? just give us a restaurant name and we can rock n roll from there. These type of people don’t give a damn about the value and merit of a small community – all they care about is the value in their Balance Sheets and Pockets. Enough!
When does this City go forward on an issue instead of always coming up short and too little and way too late in a reactive position?
I’ve been watching this issue for a long time and now need to get into the fray.
TIMESHARE pt 2 – Please name names as this entire negative take over of our town is despicable!!! I’ve looked at the City Council Special Agenda item: https://www.sedonaaz.gov/Sedonacms/Modules/ShowDocument.aspx?documentid=23830 and it looks like the Chamber is trying to cover their backsides in order to be the one and only Tourist Bureau in order to prove to Council the rational of all the $1.5million the City has given the Chamber is worth the expenditure.
That simply does not excuse or remove what the Time Shares have done and what the City has NOT Done!
Time shares have a bank of lawyers and an unbelievable amount of money they have made off of all buyers and they don’t give a damn about the communities they go into or how they degrade them! All they care about is their stealing money from folks who believe they are getting something of value that they could not otherwise afford! All they believe in is circumventing laws and they just cruse on to the bank
When I first saw the Council agenda item and looked at the details of Council’s packet, I was amazed to see that all the complaints were on the Chamber’s letterhead. While I’m not a fan of the Chamber – I will give them a tich of credit for bringing the issue forward….even though the issue and the Chamber is a dollar short and years late.
What is just unforgivable, to me, is that – as I recall – many years ago the Council put a lid on the hawkers on sidewalks outside their uptown little cheap rental spaces and them hiring people who felt being abusive to our visitors was somehow palatable.
Yet because the City was not vigilant and has not enforced (yet again!) laws on the books (on a variety of levels)…….the timeshare gargoyles have taken a new foot hold in our town and cause us to have a black eye.
What about the complaints from visitors and in town businesses in regards to the Chambers visitor Center?
How many times do we have to hear they only recommend their members, Not the city businesses who contributed to the tax basis? They openly admit they do not recommend city businesses if they are not their members.
I see this as another way the CoC is trying to control the City. The timeshares recommends in city tours and restaurants just like the Chamber. Everyone “pays” to belong to a club, Timeshare or Chamber. No difference. They both claim to bring business to Sedona.
They only way the city can get away from the “payoffs and kickback Clubs and memberships” is to have their own independent visitors center. CUT OFF the Chamber.
The City should be more concern on providing their own Customer Satisfaction program. Let the residents and in town businesses review your performance.
Before the City Council next Tuesday is a request from staff for $391,943.65 for the construction of Police Shooting Range improvements at the Wastewater Treatment Plant. OMG! The shooting range cost next to nothing years ago when it was located on Forest Service land beyond the north end of Jordan Road in the Uptown area.
“Various police agencies in the Verde Valley utilize the facilities for training purposes” is one reason given for going forward with improvements such as raising the exiting berm; a concrete shooting pad; new solar lighting; etc.
A look at the shooting range calendar reveals the line-up for freebies by those outside the Sedona city limits. The August users/usages numbers? Cottonwood PD = 4; HSI/DHS = 3; DPS = 2; YCSO Detention = 1; SPD = 1.
Please vote NO on Home Rule.

This year we added off property marketing for:
Wyndham(uptown)
Hyatt(uptown)
Sedona Springs(89a across from Super 8)
and two vacation clubs.(One has infiltrated Olde town Cottonwood although they are trying very hard to keep all of them here in Sedona.)
That is a 250% increase in approaches to the visitors over last year. Per person. Everywhere they turn.
They are in the Village in Oak Creek Outlets and the Gas stations in VOC if you can believe that.
Business within a business at the gas station. I wonder if they need a special use permit to do that?
Take heed Big Park Regional Coordinating Council. Call Mr. Chip and find out how to protect your visitors in Big Park.
Bell Rock Inn is one big free night stay for a tour inn. I wonder what they pay the County in tax once all those marketing stays are deducted? Any guesses?
you do know there is a brand new shooting range in camp verde, state of the art? local Sedona structural and civil engineer and architect designed? there is no need to suggest cottonwood or camp verde or elsewhere will use the Sedona facility. Sedona only. check it out.

What do you mean by the 250% increase? Is that 250% more visitors?
If they do not sell the rooms no sales tax or bed tax (in the city they have both) is collected. Only on items sold.

Fellow Sedonans we are at a cross roads.
Do we elect as mayor the person that was the leader in killing the Arts Commission, a leader and funder of the effort for Sedona to take ownership of 89A (where over 71% of Sedona was against it), was against the night sky protecting street lighting now installed on 89A, and in general seems to be unfriendly to the art, business and tourism community.
This letter, and an ad from me, is in this Fridays Red Rock News please pass it around and get out and vote,
(The great news is that while Segner believes he is the great OZ – that bubble was busted and he has no curtain to stand behind any longer as he declared himself a Guerrilla Marketer.)

In the last few weeks I have received numerous phone calls and emails asking, Who Are you going to vote for in the Sedona mayoral race?On the surface, this is not an easy question to answer. Both candidates, Sandy Moriarty And Cliff Hamilton are past council members and are well respected in Sedona. When I spoke with Cliff several weeks ago, I asked him about the possible installation Of parking meters in Uptown as part of the comprehensive solution to its traffic Problems and he commented I will follow the wishes of the merchants!
I asked what about the other 8,000 people in town? Dont their needs and votes also Count? !But he says he would follow the wishes of the people involved. I can respect his opinion, even if I do not agree. Since then, I have done a little research and found out that Cliff was a leader in the Campaign and effort for Sedona to Take over ownership of State Route 89A from ADOT. He actually wanted the city to take ownership and financial responsibility for 89A. That is ok, too!. He has every right to push his own agenda, except he was on the Loosing side of this issue. Over 70% of Sedona said NO! Sedona did not want to own And maintain an expensive state highway. So much for listening to and being in tune with the will of the people.Sandy is a long time, 42 year resident of Sedona. She was one of our initial council Persons when we incorporated in 1988. I have found Sandy to be a good listener and A fair-minded team player. Sandy fought the efforts of Hamilton and others to take ownership of State Route 89A And stood with majority of the voters in Sedona who agreed with her.!So that is my answer, its Sandy for Mayor! !Your Neighbor, Steve Segner! This Flatlander doesn’t think there is much more to say on the merits of Mr. Segner and his rants and his brotherhood with the Chamber and certain people he wants to bully to get elected.

But don’t you know, nobody does it better than Sedona? (so thinks the majority of the current omnipotent city council.) They want to control the entire Verde Valley. Really, it’s becoming more of a joke and insult on a daily basis. (costly at that) But then consider the area they have “targeted” for all this expansion. The sewer plant. (as in their “sewage” doesn’t stink.)
The thought recently came to mind, while perusing these comments, is that the additional complexity to Sedona businesses, is the existence of time shares, or vacation clubs, or whatever name they are given. We have the Chamber allegedly composed of members from unincorporated areas, and only a fraction of all of Sedona businesses at that and then we have the “clubs, resorts, timeshares.” What seems to be missing from city government leadership is some kind of overall logical approach that encompasses these entities and their activities.It seems to me the City should be asking the Chamber where its “destination marketing” program is different from that done by the timeshares? Keeping these entities separate is not to Sedona’s advantage.
Councilor Jessica Williamson works for a timeshare. She should not vote on this timeshare issue.
What about locations without doors such as inside shopping areas. Where would they post a warning?
Vote No. Keep the city from raising your taxes.
@ Shannon: Why ignore the City of Sedona Shooting Range Calendar? It reveals 12 law enforcement agency reservations for the month of August. And thus far 9 exist for the month of September. Of the 21 reservations only two are for the Sedona PD. The City of Sedona is spending a whopping $391,943 for improvements to a shooting range used mainly by various Verde Valley law enforcement agencies.
Another great reason for the Sedona electorate to vote NO on Home Rule.
Will vote No on Home Rule after a struggle of conscience and while it may not come to pass it will the next time with better organization.
Little doubt that with all the hype and scare tactics others have also had “a struggle of conscience” @Chris. However, your suggestion for “better organization” if we remain stuck with uncontrolled spending (and unaccountable for that matter referencing Chamber of Commerce and affiliates) might be the only hope for those still around in four years.
It’s certain to be a long day and even a longer four years if Home Rule passes. If defeated, a mere two years of good behavior will for sure serve us well in order to see if the city “earns” the privilege to write their own script again.
