Sedona AZ (June 3, 2013) – The Sedona Heritage Museum recently completed its third phase of a multi-year program to digitize approximately 14,000 photographic images taken by long-time Sedona writer and photographer, Elizabeth Rigby.

This project was made possible with a grant from the Arizona Historical Records Advisory Board (AHRAB) and matching funds from the Museum’s board members. AHRAB’s grant mission is to increase access to and preserve historical materials. The third phase of the digitizing program included sorting, cataloging, archival re-storage and scanning over 1200 negatives ranging from the 1960s to 1970s.

“With this completed work, we have preserved about half of the Rigby Collection,” explained Museum historian, Janeen Trevillyan. “Throughout the process, the museum discovered some real gems, for example, early photos of renowned sculptor John Waddell, Sen. Barry Goldwater in a variety of roles with local residents, a rare photo of Sedona’s own legislator-rancher Kel Fox, and insightful images of Sedona families, children and lost places.”

The Museum has written another AHRAB grant request hoping to be able to continue this project. Digitization of Rigby’s photographs insure the images survive the physical form and are easier for viewing and research through the Museum’s electronic catalog system.

In other news, the Museum Shop was chosen as the first retail outlet for a new DVD, Aerial Sedona: A Breathtaking Journey. Local film maker Richard Ruehs of Red Rock TV and Arizona Helicopter Adventures partnered to produce a stunning Sedona video, narrated by John Conway with original music by Robin Miller, filmed over several months during all four of Sedona’s beautiful seasons. The DVD is recommended for locals and tourists alike and will make a great gift or souvenir (2-disc set is available in Blue Ray or standard).

The Sedona Heritage Museum, 735 Jordan Road, uptown Sedona, is operated by the Society Historical Society. For more information about viewing the newly cataloged digital images, call 928-282-7038. The museum and its gift shop are open 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. daily to the public.
