Eye on Sedona Community Plan Update

Sedona AZ (April 29, 2011)-One of the great things about Arizona is that cities and towns in Arizona are required by state law to update community plans every ten years providing each community the opportunity to say to its residents “How do you want to see YOUR community develop in the next ten years?  What is important to you, to your family, to your neighbors and friends?”  Every ten years the citizens of Arizona communities can change goals and priorities and that is what Sedona Arizona citizens are preparing to do in 2011 and 2012.

Sedona community-wide meetings have been scheduled for May 19, 2011 and May 21, 2011 to educate the public on the Community Plan process and how to become involved in its update. A summer meeting schedule for July and August 2011 is in the process of being determined by the Community Plan Update committee, to be made public after Community Plan meetings in May.

The City of Sedona is in the process of developing an update to the current Community Plan that reflects citizens wants, values and goals. The Sedona Community Plan Update steering committee, volunteer Sedona citizens, is referring to the plan development and vision for the City of Sedona’s future as “Imagine Sedona  – 2020 and Beyond.” While the Sedona Community Plan is a visionary document, it is also a policy document and addresses many important elements such as land use, growth, transportation, open space, the environment, housing, water resources, historic preservation, and arts and culture.

The first Sedona Community Plan was developed in 1991 and updated in 1998 and 2002. Past Sedona community plans played important roles in establishing current land use regulations, uptown planning, and plans for the west Sedona commercial corridor.

Some examples of past years Sedona community plan goals are:

  • Maintaining the City’s overall growth capacity at 1990 levels
  • Amendment 12 to the Coconino National Forest Plan to preserve our open spaces
  • Adoption of Design Review Manual
  • The re-design and construction of SR 179
  • Restrictions on the location of hotels and timeshares.

The Sedona Community Plan Update 2002 goals became an intrinsic part of Sedona’s development. The present Community Plan update will be an on-going project into 2012.  It is vital that the public participates in the community plan update process, and its citizens have the final approval of the Sedona Community Plan by a public vote in 2013.

The Sedona Community Plan update meetings begin May 2011 for the IMAGINE SEDONA – 2020 and Beyond envisioning.  The Sedona community is asked to attend the May 19, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. and May 21, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. public meetings at the Sedona Creative Life Center.  The City of Sedona Community Update Plan is an opportunity to work together as citizens to determine the City of Sedona’s future.
