Denver VA Center Project to be Investigated

Denver VA Replacement Medical Center price tag climbs to $1 Billion

Denver VA Replacement Medical Center price tag soars to $1 billion from $604 million

Sedona AZ (January 19, 2015) – In a statement released today, the Department of Veterans Affairs said it will continue the work to complete the Denver replacement VA Medical Center project without further delay, while delivering the best value to taxpayers under current circumstances. It finds the situation in Colorado unacceptable to Veterans, taxpayers and Department leadership, and agrees the VA is obligated to ensure that such an outcome never occurs again, by learning all it can from past mistakes and put in place corrective actions to improve future performance.

The Department of Veterans Affairs will form an administrative investigative board to look into possible mismanagement and misconduct of the $604 million project. Scheduled to be completed by June 2014, cost overruns have driven the Denver project’s estimated completion cost to $1 billion. The medical center contractor, Kiewit-Turner, resumed construction on December 22, 2014, after walking off the job due to cost overruns and upon receipt of a $157 million payment from the VA for past costs. The new completion date for the medical center is unknown.

The VA statement promises Veterans and taxpayers that a thorough review will be completed and those responsible will be held accountable. With these objectives in mind, the following actions are being taken by the VA:

VA has requested that the Corps complete a detailed examination of the VA major construction program to improve management processes, structures, and controls ‎in project oversight and delivery. The Department is also convening an Administrative Investigation Board to review all aspects of the Denver project to determine the facts that led to the current situation, and gather evidence of any misconduct or mismanagement that contributed to this unacceptable outcome. Effective immediately, the Department’s Construction and Facility Management organization will report to the Deputy Secretary through the Office of Management.

The Denver replacement Veterans Administration Medical Center project is in Aurora, Colorado.
