Dear Mayor, Vice Mayor and Members of the Sedona City Council

Sedona Posse Grounds Park

Sedona AZ (June 12, 2010)In an open letter to the Sedona City Council received by SedonaTimes.com, city resident Eddie S. Maddock writes:

Because I was unable to attend the city council meeting Tuesday evening, I just learned of the outcome of the vote with regards to the decision about approving alcoholic beverage availability at city parks. Thanks so much for what, in my opinion, was a sane and sensible outcome as reflected by majority vote.

Sincerely I hope that you will be as cautious and prudent when it comes to the final moment of displaying art work in the roundabouts at SR179, Brewer Road, and SR89A . As a resident in a subdivision off of SR179, from experience I can attest to the relief I have for the roundabout at Morgan Road. The former exit was hazardous entering the highway in either direction. However, distraction by drivers, many of whom are addicted to using cell phones while driving, is concerning at all of the roundabouts, not to mention tourists looking at scenery as well as pondering directions to various locations. Approaching the two intersections under consideration for art work it becomes even more confusing, especially taking into account that drivers are entering double-laned traffic.

SR179 HowToDrive roundaboutOf course art in Sedona is important. However, so is common sense.

If God had given me the talent to be creative, as are so many of our blessed artists, I would have also hoped for the discretion to opt out of having my art displayed where even remotely it might be the cause of an accident.

Again you guys (and gracious lady), thanks ever so much for your devoted efforts. Please, reinstate your token monetary compensation. Those who made comments suggesting this proposal at the city council meeting on May 25th were right on target.

Respectfully submitted,

Eddie S. Maddock

Absolutely right on, Eddie! On a recent walk, it was difficult not to become a traffic flow instructor! One out of every 5 cars approaching the roundabouts blended and navigated the circle as intended. To that one out of five, you are Highway Gods or Goddesses. To the other four of you, park it in a garage because YIELD does not mean Stop-Look-Count to Five and Inch Forward! Roundabout rules do not include Stop-Watch-Pull forward-Stop Again-Now Go-Not Yet. AND TO THE GREATEST IDIOT DRIVERS OF ALL….WHY ARE YOU STOPPING WHILE DRIVING IN THE ROUNDABOUT SO THAT OTHER CARS MAY ENTER?? And the City wants to add Artwork??? One out of five drivers will take it in stride, but the other four will surely incite Roundabout Road Rage. At most, let’s fund two small signs that rotate 360 degrees and stake one in the middle of each roundabout. Award an artist a pack of stencils and a box of colored markers to decorate each sign with “Keep Moving, Morons. You have TWO LANES and WHERE in the hell do you see a STOP sign?”

  2. Considering how tourists frequently enjoy using statuary for “photo-ops”, think about this. Mom and Pop are encouraging Junior to sit atop the cute “horsie”, or maybe on a cowboy’s knee, or perhaps between the span of an Eagle’s wings . . . in the center of two lanes of circular traffic? Oh, let the games begin. Maybe another sign might be considered directing traffic to the library or uptown to take advantage of “photo-ops” with Sedona Schnebly or the Joe Beeler statue? At least two other sensible options are already in place. But what the heck. “Sensible” is the operative word and what has that had to do with most past decisions made in Sedona?
