Seligman fire personnel responded to the scene and confirmed the man as deceased. He has since been identified as Desmond Andrus, 49, of Lakeside, California.

Detectives from the YCSO Criminal Investigations Bureau are investigating. Based on Andrus’ injuries, detectives believe he wandered about a half mile from the BNSF tracks where his shoes, papers and a liquor bottle were found. It is presumed that he jumped from a moving train.

Detectives also learned that Andrus was seen near train tracks in Flagstaff, Arizona, during the afternoon of February 26, 2015. That same evening, YCSO deputies checked rail lines in the Seligman area after freight train personnel reported seeing a man lying near the tracks as they passed through. Deputies were unable to find anyone at that time.

Yavapai County Medical Examiner personnel briefed detectives that the preliminary causes of death are exposure and other natural circumstances. Further details are pending.

Detectives are working with BNSF railway authorities to gather any additional evidence related to Andrus’ death.

If anyone has information about this incident or had contact with Desmond Andrus prior to his death, please call the YCSO Criminal Investigations Bureau at 928-771-3278: Refer to case 15-007394.
