David Lujan — Candidate for Attorney General – Arizona – Democrat (Primary)

SEDONA AZ–“Being a former Assistant Attorney General, I know how important the office is,” candidate for Arizona Attorney General David Lujan said. “It is the top consumer advocate and law enforcement office in the state. Being that the economy is tough that becomes even more important. My priority will be the consumer fraud and scams that we see, ID theft, mortgage fraud, and in particular, I want to focus on helping seniors and others who often become victims for those kind of crimes. I want to provide education for seniors to help them not become victims in the first place.”

Candidate Lujan pointed out that Arizona is near or at the top of all states for ID fraud. He believes it is important to make more resources available and make a concerted effort to address the issue. Lujan’s first step would be education and he intends to develop materials and travel to rural areas, to visit seniors and help them learn how to not become victims of ID fraud in the first place.

“When fraud does occur, it is critical that the Attorney General take a lead role because ID theft usually crosses jurisdictional boundaries,” Democratic candidate Lujan added. “For instance, the victim may live in one county, a perpetrator works from another county and the banking transaction may be in yet another county. It becomes incumbent on law enforcement to work together throughout the state and develop a comprehensive plan. David Lujan believes his comprehensive approach may be one reason that he is endorsed by law enforcement all across the state “because he intends to bring everyone together.”

Arizonan Lujan’s second priority is to go after crime associated with the border; drug cartels, human trafficking and money launderers. In his opinion “this is where the Attorney General can be most affective.” Democratic candidate Lujan wants to continue what Terry Goddard, “has done so well, going after the money. Like going after Western Union which was assisting the drug cartels.”

David Lujan would like to make it a Class Three (3) felony to purchase property to be used by traffickers such as “drop” houses and he also wants to make it a Class  Three (3) felony to purchase weapons under false pretenses and transfer them to the cartels.  Candidate for Arizona Attorney General Lujan said, “Neither of these are full solutions but they are real tools to go after these criminal organizations.”

The third area of focus to Democratic candidate David Lujan is to help child abuse victims and adult victims of domestic violence.  Lujan is currently working with Defenders of Children, an advocacy group for victims of child abuse.

“Child abuse and domestic violence are actually the largest areas of focus for the Attorney General’s office. One third of all the attorneys in the agency are devoted to child abuse cases and I am the only candidate that has any experience in that kind of work,” Arizona Democratic August 24 Primary candidate Lujan said. “I have worked with the abuses in the polygamist community in Colorado City.  Through Child Protective Services, it is the Attorney General that goes to court and advocates on the behalf of the agency. And there has been a dramatic increase in abuse cases in Arizona recently, which is to be expected due to economic distress.”

Candidate Lujan also points out that the Attorney General’s office has experienced severe budget cuts, its budget reduced to the level of 1990. Lujan knows that there are priorities in state government and hopes that his time in the legislature has provided him “with sufficient experience and goodwill to work with the legislature and ensure adequate funding to protect Arizonans.”
