Sedona AZ (October 16, 2014) – At the October 28, 2014, the City of Sedona placed on its council agenda the revision of its City Code to allow alcohol on City property. The council discussion will involve what city locations are appropriate to allow the consumption and sale of alcohol, if any, as well as the required permitting process for applicants.

The intention of this potential change is not to allow for the consumption of alcohol at city parks on a full-time basis; the city parks will retain the rule “no alcohol is permitted” unless Council decides that special event promoters should have the option to ask for permission to serve or sell alcohol during an event on City property.

Those interested in this topic or those wishing to speak on this matter are encouraged to attend the City Council meeting at 4:30 p.m. in Sedona City Hall, 102 Roadrunner Drive, Sedona 86336. For more information or with questions, contact the Parks and Recreation office at 928-282-7098.

IMO, if the City wants to compete with local business, it should file to disincorporate.

    @Marc Luckey

Finally what? Booze at events on city property or disincorporation? :-)

How to drive business out of the city …..

If this City Parks gal and the City Council believe they need to allow Booze on sites owned by City in order to bring in visitors, etc., then the assets and events they want to sell are sorely lacking in interest to the majority of people unless they can have a glass of something in their hands.

Since the City is looking hi and low to get more money in their coffers to pay for their grandiose wish list – why should this concept surprise us?

the kids call this cray-cray. I just call it Crazy!

It’s about time.when we travel to other city’s, there is music people with their pets blankets and having fun as a community. I’m so happy more and more youthful people and families are making sedona home.and bringing new ideas and wanting to be part of a community.

What the hell is the City thinking??? Selling alcohol in city parks, especially Posse Grounds Park which is a stone’s throw from an elementary school, is a bad idea. Drivers having one too many will have to negotiate the narrow, downhill Posse Grounds Road or the winding Soldiers Pass Road when leaving the event. This scenario presents danger not only to the passengers in the car but also to the innocent citizens using these same roads to get home to their neighborhoods. The City is opening itself to very expensive lawsuits. It seems that the City is looking for trouble. There are already plenty of establishments throughout the city that provide alcohol to their patrons. The City Parks should never be one of them.

@Dale: Excellent comments and well thought out!

Two other questions I have; 1) What level of Liability Insurance will the City have to pay for based upon selling booze on City land and furthermore and how much will it cost the City?

    2) Does the City have to go to the State Liquor Board to get a Liquor License like the rest of the “businesses” who sell booze do? Oh, and then does the City Council have to bring the Liquor License back up to the Council for a special Liquor License – like all the other ‘Special Event’ groups have to?

In reading the Red Rock News Court article regarding arrests and fines etc – the two major Court components for Judge Lundy are Booze and Drugs! Shouldn’t that tell us something?

  9. Dennis says:

Dale is correct. Enough said. City Council: Pay Attention.

  10. Bill, uptown says:

I am adamantly opposed to any alcohol or drugs or cigarettes being allowed on city property at any time. Our city restaurants are barely getting by in this economic quagmire now compounded by the Slide Fire. Business owners are up in arms that yet another city decision may impact negatively an ability to pay rents and workers.

Let’s hear a resounding no vote from Council please on this poorly thought out agenda item.
