Highway Litter Recovery

by

Cottonwood Arizona LDS Boy Scout Troop 7021

In 2009, the Sedona Pines Resort, Sedona Pines LLC and Highlands Resort at Verde Ridge established

Cottonwood LDS Boy Scout Troop 702

a working relationship with the Cottonwood LDS Boy Scout Troop 7021. These three organizations pay the Troop 7021 Boy Scouts a $5 donation for each bag of litter they recover and process between mile posts 364-366 on Scenic Highway 89A from Cottonwood AZ to Sedona AZ.

The Scouts also recover the highway litter between mile posts 217-218 on Highway 260 from Cottonwood to Camp Verde.

The Scouts sort and dispose of all trash and recyclable items. The Scouts count and categorize all recyclable items by item type, then they donate these items to Sedona Recycles.

During the May 15, 2010 Folksville USA litter abatement event, 318 recyclable items were collected. These recyclable items consisted of 187 plastic bottles, 71 cans, 43 glass containers and 17 small plastic containers. These items included alcoholic and non-alcoholic containers.

During the May litter abatement event, the Scouts raised $202 in donations. The donations earned by the Scout Troop 7021 were based on 28 litter bags at $5 per bag and $62 in pledge donations.

During the August 14, 2010, Folksville USA event, 375 recyclable items were collected. These items consisted of 211 plastic bottles, 134 cans, 21 glass containers and 9 small plastic containers. These items included alcoholic and non-alcoholic containers.

During the August event, the Boy Scouts made $240 in donations. The donations earned were based on 38 litter bags at $5 per bag, and $50 in pledge donations raised by the Troop.
