Cornville Memorial Day Program

veterans 2014Sedona AZ (May 15, 2015) On May 23, 2015, beginning at 11:00 a.m., the American Legion Post 135 and Auxiliary will host its fifth annual Memorial Day Observation program at Windmill Park, 9950 East Cornville Road, in Cornville, Arizona. The public is invited and welcome to attend.

Keynote speaker will be Camp Verde Mayor Charles German who served four years in the U.S. Naval Security Group from 1964 – 1968 during the Vietnam War. German received notice that Uncle Sam wanted him while assistant manager of a McClellan Cory Corporation store in Sierra Vista. An Arizona native, born in Flagstaff, he moved to Camp Verde in February 1951, attended Camp Verde Unified School District and graduated from Northern Arizona University with a major in Forestry/Park Service.

According to recent Veterans Administration statistics, our World War II vets are dying at a rate of approximately 492 a day. This means there are only about 855,070 veterans remaining of the 16 million who served our nation during World War II. In honor of these veterans, while focusing on those who served on the USS Arizona, German’s speech will highlight the service and the sacrifices all veterans made on behalf of our country.

Serving as master of ceremony will be Robert Hall, Past Post Commander American Legion Post 61. Post 61 is located in Avondale, Arizona.

Tom Gore, Post 135 Chaplain, will serve as event chaplain and, special for this year’s event, is Verde Valley Voices vocalist and member of American Legion Unit 135 Auxiliary, Marlene Zuercher. Marlene will launch the day’s program by singing not only the national anthem, Star Spangled Banner, but the spirit-lifting song This Land is Your Land.

Due to traditionally warm temperatures, participants are encouraged to bring a lawn chair and umbrella. Following the program, refreshments and bottled cold water donated by the Cottonwood Wal-Mart will be offered. 1. They simply don’t make ’em like this any more. Take five minutes to watch this video interview — and listen carefully to what he says and how he says it. I promise you, you won’t regret a second of it. Ask yourself, how many of the few surviving WWII veterans kept themselves and their uniform in such good condition for over 70 years and can still proudly wear it? Notice his superb delivery, no teleprompter, no script — just a 91-year-old fighter pilot representing the greatest generation at home and abroad who won WWII. He has some surprises and a great take on the philosophy of life.

Enjoy! And thank God for those vets.
