  1. How to get involved with “America the Beautiful & BagReadyJobs”? See below to contact me:

    Gary Chamberlain, Folksville USA
PO Box 1138 Cornville, AZ 86325
    FolksvilleUSA@gmail.com (928) 202-1186

If your community gets involved in this effort, please let us know so we may share your story with others. Use the information below to contact your local editors, government and civic leaders: Let’s all make a difference!

Dear America’s Editors, Mayors and City Managers,

What would happen if every City Manager and Mayor across America encouraged their community leaders, businesses and citizens to work with their local state Adopt-A-Highway groups and pick up highway litter on four specific and reoccurring dates?

If these community leaders selected the third weekend of February, May, August and November and routinely promoted this effort through their local media, could we as one nation, consisting of 50 states, will make a difference in restoring the true beauty to “America the Beautiful”.

If these community leaders would invite all Adopt-A-Highway groups to their City Council meeting at the end of each year and thank each group by name for their efforts, this would be a great way to show appreciation for those that make America beautiful.

The following “Press Release” will start a nationwide movement towards achieving the “America the Beautiful & BagReadyJobs” event. Using August 16, 2014 as the first nationwide effort to promote “America the Beautiful & BagReadyJobs”, this will provide every person in America a chance to participate in some capacity:

City Manager [Name] and Mayor [Name] of [City or Town, State] would like to invite all community leaders, businesses and citizens to join them on August 16, 2014 at [time and location] for the sole purpose of recovering the litter on [name of highway].

There will be a planning-coordination meeting for this effort on [date, time and place] and we would encourage any Adopt-A-Highway groups needing assistance to attend this meeting and provide the information required for this effort to meet the safety requirements of our local Adopt-A-Highway Program.

We will be formatting our effort on a program that was launched in Arizona by “Folksville USA and America the Beautiful & BagReadyJobs”. As a community, we have a chance to be part of an effort that could receive national attention and certainly will benefit our community.

“Many hands with one goal” is the slogan “America the Beautiful & BagReadyJobs” is promoting nationwide. Fifty States make up one America. We will be following this format:

    “America the Beautiful & BagReadyJobs”
As proud American’s, will we honor our Armed Forces, veterans and communities by participating in the “America the Beautiful and BagReadyJobs” effort?

The “America the Beautiful & BagReadyJobs” effort will be used as a teaching, learning and earning opportunity for our nation’s youth groups. “BagReadyJobs” is funded by community businesses and residents.

Youth groups will learn how to develop marketing, sales, service and billing skills for their services rendered. Youth groups will negotiate fees with their local businesses and residents for picking up the litter on the highway and filling 33 gallon bags. The youth groups will work with their local Adopt-a-Highway groups and assist them in their efforts to restore the beauty to “America the Beautiful”.

The businesses and residents that pledge funding or products to the youth groups will negotiate a fee between $7 and 10 for every 33 gallon bag of trash the youth group fills to the brim.

The nation’s official Adopt-A-Highway group leaders will document the participation of the youth groups and the number of bags they fill. The youth groups will provide a copy of the Adopt-A-Highway group leader’s confirmation of their participation and the number of bags they filled to their funding sponsors.

In addition to displaying the trash-filled bags on the highway for 4 days as part of creating an awareness, education and recognition opportunity, the youth groups are required to write an essay that addresses the following five questions. The youth groups are to provide a copy of their essays to those funding their activities and to their local news media organizations.

    The essay questions are:
    1) What did you learn?
    2) What solutions might reverse the occurrence of highway litter and recycling efforts?
    3) How does highway litter impact the economy of your community?
    4) In addition to the negative economic effects, how does highway litter reflect on the residents?
    5) What will you do to do to make a difference?

Those providing funding will pay the youth groups for their services once all of the obligations have been fulfilled.

“America the Beautiful and BagReadyJobs” litter events are being promoted nationwide on the third Saturday of February, May, August and November, however, many Adopt-A-Highway groups select random dates for their cleanup activities. Our goal is to connect America’s Adopt-A-Highway groups needing help with youth groups wanting to help. Folksville USA would like to receive copies of the essays written so we may share them with others.

“America the Beautiful and BagReadyJobs” is the perfect opportunity for city and town leaders to challenge their community businesses and residents to support local youth groups that want to earn their funding. These young adults are our future role models and leaders. Recycling activities and getting some exercise are additional benefits that can be realized through this effort.

If our community could invest 8-12 hours per year participating in this effort and spreading our success nationwide through social media, this effort could be a frugal method to promote our community and community pride.

    Respectfully,

    Russ Cleaner, City Manager
    Charlie Roads, Mayor

  3. Dear Editor,

Over the past week, five ADOT Adopt-A-Highway groups were out in force and they were noticed making the Verde Valley and America more beautiful.

It is estimated that these five groups collected 70 bags of trash on 5 miles of highway.

The Highway 260 groups between Camp Verde and Cottonwood consisted of Highlands Resort at Verde Ridge, Yavapai Sheriff Department and Faith Lutheran Church.

The Highway 89A groups between Sedona and Cottonwood consisted of Sedona Pines Resort and Sedona Pines LLC.

The Prescott ADOT District has done a great job of mowing Highway 260 between Camp Verde and Cottonwood.

It’s nice to recognize those that make phrase “America the Beautiful” have meaning.

  4. Highway Forensics speak loudly,

For those that pick up the trash on our highways, it is very clear from the thousands of alcohol containers and common drug paraphernalia found on our highway shoulders that we all drive on highways that have a high risk element.

With the growing and widespread abuse of alcohol and drugs in our society plus impaired drivers, we have a national epidemic with no effective cure close at hand.

It is very clear to me that there are many lessons not being taught in our homes and schools.

If you need proof of our alcohol and drug issues, go assist one of the many Adopt-A-Highway groups in your community ….. the proof is laying on the ground.

  7. Mal Otterson says:

I have been working with Gary Chamberlain for several years as the coordinator for the Verde Villages Property Owners’ Association highway cleanup effort. Our group has volunteered to maintain a 2 mile section of highway 260.

We clean up our section 4 times per year. It is always a surprise to me and our volunteers what an incredible volume of trash is discarded along our highways. It seems that no one really cares about the impression we give to any travelers or tourists.

I appreciate Gary’s efforts to bring more people into the effort, regardless of how frustrating it is. It is difficult to feel that one is the only person maintaining the fight.

I congratulate Gary for his efforts and thank him profusely.

  8. Dear Congressman Gosar,

I want to thank you for the generous letter regarding our Folksville USA “America the Beautiful & BagReadyJobs” effort.

I am well aware of your participation in Adopt-A-Highway litter events and your upcoming litter event that may include our youth.

I apologize for not posting this very specific thank-you comment sooner and I hope other political leaders like yourself get involved and reach out to groups trying to improve the image and economy of Arizona.

The content of your letter indicates that you, and your staff, gave this compliment to our group a lot of thought.
