Sedona AZ (May 19, 2015) –  Since Friday, May 15, 2015, YCSO deputies arrested six individuals for separate DUI incidents in Arizona locations that include the Village of Oak Creek, Cordes Lakes, Bagdad, Black Canyon City and two arrests in Prescott Valley. Concerned citizens reported two of the DUI incidents to law enforcement and, as a result, likely prevented these individuals from harming themselves or others on our highways.

On May 16, 2015, around 5:30 in the evening, a YCSO deputy heard an attempt to locate radio message involving a reckless driver in the area of Highway 89 and Willow Creek Road, Prescott. The vehicle, a red Toyota Rav 4, was later spotted by the deputy on Glassford Hill Road and Spouse Drive in Prescott Valley. Its driver, 49-year-old Prescott Valley resident June Pelton, was pulled over and subsequently failed field sobriety tests. Deputies confirmed reckless driving behavior with the original reporting party, including unsafe speed and passing vehicles on the right.

During a follow-up with a drug recognition expert, Pelton admitted recent methamphetamine and OxyContin ingestion. Deputies found numerous prescription medicines, along with bindles containing methamphetamine and heroin, in her purse. Preliminary test results confirmed illicit drug use and driving under the influence. Pelton was booked at the Camp Verde Detention Center on charges including DUI Drug, Endangerment, Possession of Dangerous Drugs, Possession of a Narcotic Drug, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. She has since been released on a $5,000 bond.

On May 16, 2015, at approximately 9:30 in the evening, a resident living on Desert Cove in Black Canyon City reported a silver Hyundai sedan stuck in a nearby ditch after making a U-turn and that it appeared the driver was intoxicated. YCSO arrived and identified the car’s driver as Norman Abreo, 64, from Missouri. Abreo told deputies he had consumed “less than a pint of vodka” while heading to Missouri from Glendale, Arizona, and because of the strong odor of alcohol on his breath and person, deputies administered field sobriety tests which he failed. Abreo refused further tests, so a search warrant was sought and approved.

More than two hours later, Abreo’s breath tests scored .19 and .18 per cent alcohol concentration, well over twice the legal limit. Additionally, Abreo had DUI priors from 2012 and 2013 and, in March 2015, had been arrested for Super Extreme DUI by the Phoenix Police Department. YCSO arrested Abreo for Aggravated Driving under the Influence and booked him into the Camp Verde Detention Center where he remains in-custody on a $5,000 bond.

And finally, a sobering thought.

In 2013, 10,076 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, accounting for nearly one-third (31%) of all traffic-related deaths in the United States. (Credit Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2014 report).
