Cathy Eden — Candidate U.S. Senate – Democrat – Arizona

SEDONA AZ–“I am running because this is the state I love and I think we are in trouble,” Cathy Eden, candidate for U.S. Senate-Arizona said, “I have spent my whole career trying to make Arizona a good place to be and I think we are in trouble on a national level. The economy is the most important issue. If we can get the economy going and our feet on the ground, people will just be too busy to be mean.  That will make the difference.”

Eden wants to see manufacturing supported in the state to get people employed and working. She believes that Arizona is perfectly situated to create a viable solar energy industry but Eden doesn’t want to see a piecemeal process with out-of-state companies building solar facilities with foreign manufactured products.

Candidate for U.S. Senate Eden wants to see Arizona become the leader in solar power; “the whole package” from production of the panels, support equipment to locating companies within the state. To make this happen, she believes that tax cuts and incentives to the industry rather than subsidies are critical.

Candidate Eden would also support tax cuts and a lower payroll tax to put people back to work.

“Because housing is so important to the Arizona economy”  Cathy Eden wants the First Time Home Buyers Tax Credit expanded so that it would apply to all home buyers for up to ten per cent of the value of the home. “We have 3.7 million empty houses. With this incentive of 10%, we can fill half a million homes in the next year and that will also create jobs.”

“I put SB1070 right at the feet of John McCain,” Eden said. “Immigration has to be done at the federal level. States and counties can’t decide this. I take the issue seriously but only the federal government should be doing it. The reason I put it at the feet of John McCain is that there was the Kennedy/McCain Bill and it was close to moving in the right direction. McCain got his feelings hurt when the ‘Right’ said it was amnesty and he “pulled” the bill. We have known we had to do something for a long time and McCain did not. The state got frustrated and passed SB1070 but it is not a state issue.”

Eden went on to say, “The bill does not address security at the border and it does not address what to do with the 10 or 12 million people that are here in this country. We need a U.S. Senator in Washington DC to take care of this. Arizona sent up the flare saying something should be done. Most people think the state should not be doing it, that something should be done but not this way.”

Senatorial candidate Eden believes that mistakes have been made with trade policy and that an overhaul in terms of incentives and taxes is required because “sending everything around the world is not working. Jobs are needed in the U.S.”

As to the war policy Eden remarked, “The generals say they are ready to start the draw-down in the Middle East.”  These statements cause Eden to believe the importance of doing just that “because we need those kids back home. We cannot be the keeper of the entire world because we are in a tough spot ourselves right now.”

As to Cathy Eden’s positions on other state issues, “Rural Arizona is important to me. The world doesn’t rotate around Phoenix and Tucson. I was a County Manager at Coconino and I was involved in starting ACCESS which was needed by the rural communities. And I was able to make that happen for them. I am a native and I have lived a great deal of time in rural Arizona.  I have a good understanding of its issues and will make sure it’s a priority. The rural counties need a Senator that has lived in those rural areas.”

Dr. Cathy Eden finished the interview by saying “Every office in Arizona has been filled by woman from Governor to Attorney General. There is only one job that hasn’t been filled by a woman and that is United States Senator. After twenty-eight years, what do you expect to get different in the twenty-ninth?”
