Flagstaff AZ (November 8, 2012) – The Coconino County Arizona Sheriff’s Office has recovered a body in Pumphouse Wash at the north end of Oak Creek Canyon.
The Sheriff’s Office received a call late Sunday afternoon, November 4, 2012, from a hiker who advised he had been hiking in Pumphouse Wash when he discovered a decomposed body off the trail. Due to nightfall and the fact the hiker was out of the canyon, sheriff’s deputies did not attempt a recovery until Monday morning.
Coconino Sheriff’s Office deputies and detectives, Coconino County Search and Rescue, and Coconino County Medical Examiners Office were led into the area by the hiker. The body was located about ¾ of a mile east of the Oak Creek Vista Overlook.
The body was removed and taken to the Coconino County Medical Examiners office for autopsy to attempt to determine cause of death and identification.
Investigators received confirmation through dental records that the recovered body is that of missing person, 27-year-old Shaun Rentz of White Bear Lake, Minnesota.
Rentz’ vehicle was found abandoned at the Oak Creek Vista overlook parking lot on July 31, 2012. An extensive search was conducted to locate Rentz in the days that followed, but he was not located.
Cause of death is still under investigation.
