Sedona AZ (November 15, 2013) – On Monday, November 11, 2013, rescue crews from several agencies rescued a base jumper off Lee Mountain in the Sedona, Arizona, area.

Just after 1:00 PM on Monday, the Sedona 911 center received a call of a possible climbing accident on Lee Mountain. The Sedona Fire District, along with the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Unit, responded and found the victim, a 27 year old male from the Prescott area, had crash landed after a base jumping equipment malfunction.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety Air Rescue helicopter responded. Rescuers made their way to the top of Lee Mountain by foot and by helicopter insertion.

The BASE jumper sustained injuries as a result of a parachute failure and was stranded on a ledge approximately 600 feet below the top of the mountain. A rescuer based “pick-off” was conducted:  The rescuer rappelled 600 feet to the patient’s location and provided medical care. The rescuer then rappelled the patient another 300 feet to the bottom of the mountain where additional personnel assisted in carrying the injured man to a waiting UTV equipped for patient transport.

By approximately 11:00 PM, the patient was driven to a trail head to a waiting ambulance and subsequently transported to the Flagstaff Medical Center by Sedona Fire.

The rescue took 10 hours to complete. The close coordination and cooperation between the agencies involved provided quality rescue services. The DPS Ranger helicopter was instrumental in this Coconino County operation – its team conducted five flights for aerial assessments, inserted personnel and later recovered equipment.
