Yavapai County flooded yard in Prescott Valley area

Sedona AZ (June 30, 2015) –  On June 29, 2015, Arizona had several severe storms move across regions of its Yavapai County. Prescott Valley reported 2.41 inches of rain in less than an hour with power outages with hail and shallow flood inundation across the area. The National Weather Service reported 72 mph winds in the town of Wickenburg. The town of Clarkdale experienced hail and high winds.

The summer monsoon season has arrived in Yavapai County.

Just a reminder that as witnessed in several locations in the County over the last few years, monsoons can linger over an area and drop copious amounts rain in a brief period of time, resulting in significant storm water runoff and flooding.

Here are a few things you can do to protect yourself and your property:

  1. Whether or not you are in a mapped high-risk flood hazard area, any homeowner can purchase flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program. See www.floodsmart.gov or contact your insurance agent for more information. Flood losses are not covered under normal homeowners’ insurance policies.
  2. Clean out ditches and drainage areas. Remove debris and overgrowth vegetation from drainage areas. Maximizing flow paths for storm water to reach and be carried through existing drainage facilities is crucial.
  3. If your home is prone to shallow inundation, acquire sandbags and or plywood for your entryways. Keep them on standby. Contact Yavapai County Emergency Management at 928-771-3321 to find out where sand and sandbags are staged for use.
  4. Repair or open crushed culverts to maximize the intended flow capacity and keep culverts clean of debris.
  5. Never cross flooded roadways, and stay away from flooded drainage areas. Swift water is very dangerous, and the unseen road may not be there. See the Yavapai County Flood Control District website at www.ycflood.com for additional tips and information.
