At approximately 1:30 in the morning, a YCSO deputy spotted a white 2011 Ford sedan traveling south on Arizona Interstate 17 at about 40 miles per hour in a 75 mph zone impeding traffic flow. During the subsequent traffic stop, the deputy spoke with all three sedan occupants which included Williams sitting in the front passenger seat. The deputy immediately detected the odor of marijuana and alcohol coming from inside the car and noticed a liquor bottle on the floorboard at Williams’ feet.

Carlos Carabez, the driver, and Woodie Williams provided only Arizona ID cards. Jovenal, the rear seat passenger, gave her name as “Nancy Acevedo” to the officers.

When Williams was directed to exit the vehicle, he grabbed the liquor bottle in an aggressive manner as if preparing to strike the deputy. While the deputy restrained Williams, he saw Williams remove a large baggie from his jacket and toss it over the vehicle. It was later determined that the bag contained four smaller baggies of methamphetamine. Williams was arrested and, in addition to the listed charges, was booked on an outstanding felony arrest warrant issued by the state of New Mexico.

Inside the vehicle, deputies found a glass drug pipe, several scales, a marijuana cigarette, and empty alcohol containers including the full bottle removed from Williams’ grasp. A later search of Jovenal (a.k.a. Nancy Acevedo) revealed a package of meth in her underwear as well as her true identity during the booking process.

All were booked at the Camp Verde Detention Center.

It is believed these arrests provided an extra margin of safety for AZ Interstate 17 travelers. Citizens may contact the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office with information or questions at 928-771-3260.
