Arizona Department of Education to Collect Student Data

Phoenix AZ (March 4 2010) – Arizona Senate Bill 1097, a Senate Education Bill, passed Wednesday, February 24, 2010.

This bill requires the Arizona Department of Education to collect data on students enrolled in school districts who cannot demonstrate proof of legal U.S. residence. The Superintendent of Public Instruction for the State of Arizona will be permitted to withhold a school district’s state aid for non-compliance with the reporting requirements in the bill.

The Arizona Bill passed the Senate Education Committee by a vote of 4-2 (Yes: Braswell, Linda Gray, Sylvia Allen and Huppenthal; No: Aboud and Lopez). The Bill was sponsored by Sen. Russell Pierce and co-sponsored by Arizona State Senators Gorman, Burgess and Seel.
