ADOT Interstate 17 Repaving Project Continues

ADOT Interstate 17 logoSedona AZ (August 17, 2013)The Arizona Department of Transportation will begin a repaving project on northbound Arizona Interstate 17 near Black Canyon City (between mileposts 240 and 245) on Monday, August 19, 2013.

Work hours are 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly, Sunday through Thursday, at which time drivers can expect a single lane restriction and possible delays of up to thirty minutes. Work will not occur on weekends or holidays.

The $2.3 million project includes removing a layer of the existing pavement and then an application of a new layer of smooth, quiet rubberized asphalt. In addition, there will be shoulder maintenance and improvements to the rock slopes throughout the project area. The project is scheduled to be completed in early November 2013.

The work zone will be clearly marked by temporary barricades and signage. ADOT advises drivers to allow additional time to reach their destinations and to proceed through the work zone with caution, comply with the reduced speed limit, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule. 4. This week the one-hour closures for AZ I-17 roadway construction, between midnight and 1 a.m., will occur Wednesday, Sept. 4 and Thursday, Sept 5.; next week the closure will occur Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

In addition to the one-hour closures, crews will intermittently close I-17 in both directions for up to 30 minutes at a time between 9 p.m. and 4 a.m. to allow a safe work zone as crews remove large amounts of dirt from the shoulder.

Northbound I-17 will be stopped at State Route 169 and southbound I-17 traffic will be stopped at General Crook Trail until the work is completed and the roadway is reopened.

During this construction project, bicyclists are not permitted through the project work zone at any time, as the shoulders along I-17 are closed. Bicyclists can bypass the work zone via State Route 169 for northbound riders or State Route 260 for southbound riders.

In addition to the full closures, drivers can expect single-lane restrictions in both directions through the work zone between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Monday night through Friday morning.

The work zone will be clearly marked by temporary barricades and signage. ADOT advises drivers to allow additional time to reach their destinations and to proceed through the work zone with caution, comply with the reduced speed limit, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.
