Northbound I-17 reopens at Sedona turnoff

PHOENIX – The Arizona Department of Transportation has reopened northbound Interstate 17 at the Sedona turnoff (State Route 179). ADOT closed the highway near Camp Verde at milepost 298 earlier this morning due to winter weather conditions.

ADOT advises drivers to use caution as temperatures remain near freezing in the Flagstaff area and some snow and ice remain on the roadways in the area.

Bridge work complete on I-17 south of Black Canyon City

Highway linking Phoenix and northern Arizona undergoing $88 million in upgrades

As part of an $88 million investment to improve Interstate 17 over the next two years, the Arizona Department of Transportation has completed a new bridge on southbound highway over Little Squaw Creek, two miles south of Black Canyon City.

The $3.5 million project included roadway improvements north and south of the Little Squaw Creek Bridge and resurfacing the northbound bridge at milepost 239. The new bridge and shoulders were designed to accommodate future widening of I-17 and emergency vehicle access.

The southbound bridge, which was originally built in 1950, was replaced to meet modern safety standards. It had been classified as structurally deficient, meaning the bridge was safe, but required some repair or improvement. The new bridge has wider lane and shoulder widths, which will aid drivers on this busy stretch of highway, which accommodates nearly 30,000 travelers per day.

Construction began in December 2010 and was completed ahead of schedule and within budget. A total of nine projects are currently under construction, scheduled over the next two years or recently completed along I-17, a vital link between the Phoenix metropolitan area and Northern Arizona communities, including Flagstaff and Prescott.

  3. Rim Road at Grand Canyon Closing says:

State Route 67 to North Rim of Grand Canyon closing for winter season!

FLAGSTAFF – It’s an annual sign that winter has arrived in northern Arizona. The Arizona Department of Transportation will close State Route 67 between Jacob Lake (US 89A) and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon for the winter season on Nov. 28. The road could be closed earlier if heavy snowfall occurs in the area prior to the closure date.

ADOT does not clear snow from SR 67 during the winter since the visitor accommodations at the North Rim are closed. The highway reopens each spring, usually around mid-May. US 89A will remain open at the junction with SR 67.

ADOT reminds motorists to drive with caution this winter and offers these tips:

Slow Down. Drive defensively. Be patient and allow additional time for your trip.

Carry snow chains/cables in case highways are snow-packed and icy. Also be sure to pack a car safety kit that includes a cell phone.

Leave sufficient space between your vehicle and others. Give yourself plenty of room and time to stop or avoid upcoming hazards.

If stopped on the roadway, leave room for emergency vehicles to get around you. Make sure your vehicle has plenty of fuel and pack extra clothing, water, and snacks. If you slide off the roadway, stay with your vehicle. The Department of Public Safety or ADOT will respond.

Check weather and road conditions before you leave. Let someone know your route.

For more information about this closure, please contact Senior Community Relations Officer Mackenzie Kirby at 928.779.7554 or mkirby@azdot.gov.
