8th Annual Copper Ball Benefits Children

pennySedona AZ (May 11, 2010) – Tickets and tables available for the 8th Annual Copper Ball will benefit Fit Kids of Arizona. The Sedona Times Newspaper and SedonaEye.com are also proud sponsors of this good cause.

Verde Valley Medical Center’s Copper Ball has become one of Verde Valley’s premier black-tie events. Since 2002, community members have donned their best attire to enjoy an evening of dinner, music, and dancing to benefit one of the many programs and services developed by Verde Valley Medical Center to serve the healthcare needs of the community.

This year’s gala, Copper and Crystal, will take place Saturday, June 5, 2010, at the beautiful Tlaquepaque Courtyard and Crafts Village in Sedona, Arizona. The event kicks off with cocktails at 6:30 p.m., followed by an elegant dinner and dancing to the live music of the C.C. Jones Orchestra. In addition, there will be live and silent auctions and door prizes. Individual tickets are available for the low cost of just $125; corporate and table sponsorships are available.

The 2010 Copper Ball will benefit Fit Kids of Arizona, a unique program that addresses one of the largest healthcare concerns facing our country – childhood obesity. Fit Kids of Arizona, a regional community healthcare initiative developed by Verde Valley Medical Center, Flagstaff Medical Center and Northern Arizona Healthcare, helps children and families learn healthy lifestyle choices while reducing the problems and illnesses associated with excess weight.

The Fit Kids team focuses on assessing and improving the possible causes of excess body weight in children through medical examinations, physical activity counseling, nutrition counseling and behavioral change. Since opening in September 2009 at Verde Valley Medical Center, more than 100 children have been referred to the Verde Valley program; more than 350 children have been referred to the program at Flagstaff Medical Center since January 2009.

VVMC’s first Copper Ball was the result of a small group of physicians’ wives and community members who envisioned an elegant fundraising event with dinner and dancing to benefit VVMC. They named the event the Copper Ball since the area was well-known for the copper mines in Jerome in the 19th and 20th Century. The first Copper Ball was decorated in copper and black, with shiny copper pennies scattered about the tables. Community participation through attendance and the donation of items for the silent and live auctions was, and continues to be, a huge success.
