  1. Barbara, west Sedona says:

We didn’t get extra business from this in our store, but it was nice to see runners and walkers around. This kind of crowd doesn’t patronize our kind of businesses up here but the breakfast and lunch places did benefit from what I heard. Most seemed to be day only visitors from nearby and I met a couple from Tucson and a couple of Canadian snow birds who drove up from winter place in Chandler in Hillside, nice people, not big spenders, not doing jeep or sightseeing tours, not hotel stayers or restaurant goers. Canadian couple thought they’d head to Winslow then south through Roosevelt Dam area. Thought you might like to hear my experience. Keep it up Chamber. Good event.

Nobody covered the fact that the Pho place, Tealight, went out of business for no business. Just closed their doors and disappeared not even telling employees or so the rumor says. I loved their place & sad it’s gone. I think Hudson & Javalina & Murphys too many for here with not enough customers but we’ll see. I like Lisa and Mark and don’t want bad things to happen to their businesses. Rents too high, no foot traffic. Same mantra for all our stores in Sedona even when not in Hillside. And Tlaquepaque is adding more competition for the already thin and disappearing dollar. I appreciate growth but killing the golden goose is downright criminal. Somebody needs to remember we sell beauty not scenery. That’s not a NIMBY talking, it’s common sense.

  2. Very Disturbing says:

Food booths provided at point of marathon sign-up and termination of race. Took away from local businesses. No tax on food because it was considered “take-out.” How smart is that, City Council. Upside: At least much traffic was diverted to West Sedona. This is an indication of how it will be when Western Gateway is developed. Traffic gridlock at ALL points of entry (and exits) to Sedona.BRILLIANT!

  3. Debra, uptown says:

The dollars from food were funnelled to what several of us want to know? Did the busineses know because we could have used the business and the tips?

  4. Sedonian says:

I was in the race with my mom. Once the race was over, we couldn’t even turn left on 89A towards west Sedona/Uptown due to the construction across the street from the High School and the heavy traffic. We sat there waiting to turn left, then decided to go to Cottonwood for lunch and wait until the traffic subsided. Our friends went to Uptown, but they said it was nuts because of the construction and they turned around and went to lunch at Karma Cafe because of the traffic. We met up with them after lunch and decided to go to the casino where we ended up having dinner. By 9 pm we were really beat and was happen to see light traffic all the way home. Another friend said she stopped by Safeway after the race and it was so crowded she ended up going to Rinzi’s to make a salad for lunch. I have no idea who thought it was a good idea to rip up the street in Uptown when such a big event was happening. The the hotel going in across the street from the high school is just tragic. I can understand why so many people are leaving and moving elsewhere.

  5. Mike says:

I live in Foothills, it was a zoo. Still up in air whether worth it. If it’s not generating tax revenue what’s the upside?

  6. @mike says:

I guess you didn’t realize that the marathon only makes money for the regional chamber. City taxes pay for Ms Jenn to play. No audit no return on investment. 1.5 million this year 14 million has gone to the region of city taxes. But the council thinks that is okay. Get ready to pay more. cause Council person Williamson says you don’t pay enough. The city taking over trash is just a way for the city to have open billing to every house. One million dollars is the estimate of city profit for trash.

  7. Ya'll Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet says:

Construction uptown during a planned event weekend is but a mere rehearsal for things to come. Just wait until Tlaquepaque North is completed. Visualize it No additional parking provided “except” at the original location across a State Highway! And how are patrons to access new addition? The same way a chicken crosses the road – to get to the other side. This will surely be the true test of several games like Double Dare Ya or Blind Man’s Buff or Dodge ‘Em and best of all “You’re Chicken if You Don’t!” Let us pray for a sink hole to devour City Hall during a Council Meeting.

  8. West sedona resident says:

What a bunch of crybabies and complainers…

    Rock on Sedona…

BTW. I hit NO traffic in West Sedona during the event…. Sounds like someone’s making that up to show contempt for all things Sedona

  9. Look at yourselves... says:

Complain about everything?!? Why? …nothing else to do! Move to the “beauty and serenity” of Sedona, once you retire. Then complain and pout about everything, until you die a miserable and lonely death! …complain about a one day event?! …get a life! Or better yet, get your old, out of shape, “heart attack waiting to happen” butt out there and become part of the fun, for once!

  10. @Look at yourselves says:

Indeed! While I’m not retired (and with my debt, probably never will be) I understand your frustration. That said, what these (often long-time) residents are saying is that they remember when and they’d like to pass Sedona in it’s finest glory on to children and grandchildren. When you see evil in the world, the worst thing you can do is do nothing. Perhaps these elders in our community are doing all they can to wake people up. See something, say something, and may a new day dawn with hope for us all.

  11. Look Who's Talking says:

Maybe it’s time to get off residents’ backs @Look at yourselves. Not all of us are retired. We pay high rents and sales tax for business locations. Our monthly sewer fees are exorbitant. We anticipate special events in hopes of making a few sales and not be in competition with selective vendors who profit but do not collect sales tax. Those in uptown barely surviving were further handicapped this weekend by the confusion with another futile attempt to correct the inadequate engineering of the less than one mile of 89A owned by the city. And even if we are members of the chamber of commerce, we hear all the time about referrals being made outside incorporated Sedona in favor of additional member dues (bribes) being paid to the chamber.

Not only are in-city residents treated like dirt, so are many of the local businesses unless we pay for referrals. It happens all the time and if the city did their job they’d put a stop to it. Apparently, @Look at yourselves you are among those on the take.

  12. Chris Williams says:

When groups or people are not open to constructive positive change they get stuck in the rabbit hole. The city is in the hole. They spend more than they earn. They don’t like the residents or businesses. They have stepped over the lines and don’t behave like a city. They gift special interest groups like the chamber and fund their activities by the millions.

The only crybabies, whiners and beggars are staff and special interest groups that ARE funded by the taxpayers. Better to unincorporated then we get better services from the county.

  13. West sedona resident says:

    Same old…..

The above posts are by the same person…

Maybe if those in business around here catered more to locals instead of tourists all would be well…

Fancy cakes for weddings , overpriced restrants, crystals, 25.00 tea shirts etc, etc.. The list goes on and on..

Maybe your business model is screwed up.. Why you all blaming the C Of Comerce for your problems.. Bashas, drug stores, auto repair, resrants that cater to all, construction, even beals, seem to be doing well..

    So quit your bellyacheing..

I’m not a business owner but I have eyes..

  14. @Chris Williams says:

Right on! You summed it up accurately. That is EXACTLY how this city operates.

  15. Darryl Z says:

West Sedona resident – I know this is your only entertainment, but someday you should shut your computer and take a walk. It will do you good to get out of the house.

I am very sad to see Art Mart closing. There are many businesses in Sedona that are hurting. Walgreens has announced the closing of many stores, and with CVS going in they probably won’t make it. Bashas has been in and out of bankruptcy. The small coffee shops are giving way to uber corporate Whole Foods and Starbucks. The Chocolate Tree is doing well, but it’s also being harassed by the City and was shut down the day Chipolte opened in uptown. NO ONE is doing really well – many are just barely making it. One local tour guide had a write up in the New York Times, supposedly worth millions of advertising dollars, but she has left due to the fact that she had to cancel so many tours due to chemtrails obscuring the sky. The city doesn’t appreciate it’s citizens and what they have to offer and instead courts big corporations that take what they make and send to headquarters in other states.

The chamber just needs to shut down so that a real chamber takes it’s place. The citizen’s committee’s need to be disbanded — they are told what to say and promote. Promises made (such as only non-profit businesses at Cultural Park) need to be kept.

Sedonians are getting their tar and feathers ready and sharpening pitchforks. Tensions are building….

  16. On of Them says:

OK, know it all @Look at yourselves. As one of those you despise so much, at least I take credit for having made an honest living, earned the means to retire, pay my bills without whining about not getting enough entitlements (even though federal government didn’t see fit to allow a $5 a month cost of living social security increase, not an “entitlement” but something I paid into for most of my life, which investment was stolen to pay for unrelated purposes).

You can badger, nag, insult or toss out whatever ugly comments you can dream up to spew but one thing you will never own is self-respect. Your negativity, oddly enough, sends a special enlightening message that justifies my choice of existence versus yours and the “new” generation.

Lack of self-respect spills over and is misplaced in the angry remarks posted by those so disrespectful of others that may disagree. You’re to be pitied. You will clearly never know the pride and self-satisfaction of saying “I did that on my own without government assistance or standing in a begging line.” Really, very pitiful.

  17. West sedona resident says:

    @Darreyl Z

You should take your own advice….

  18. Look @ Yourselves says:

@Onofthem… I assume you meant “one of them.” Obviously, I struck a nerve; I would even wager you are retired from California! You came to Sedona for the non-existent serenity. After about 18 months, you became bored and started complaining about stuff to feed your ego!!

It’s not lack of respect; it’s knowledge of the “breed” that is attracted to the scenic beauty of Sedona! They are full of hubris and self-importance and now no one cares… So you need to make others feel the same… Can’t fool an old fool…

  19. Paul dr says:

It is very simple. FOLLOW the MONEY!

Yep those that resist change are benefiting from TAXPAYERS money.

    Simple

  20. BINGO says:

    “They are full of hubris and self-importance . . . .” @Look@Yourselves.

You hit the nail on the head describing the current City Council. Unknowns that ventured to Sedona where they now rule and pass judgment on lowly flatlanders. Definitely not the mainstream Middle West people (or even from California) that came here for peace, quiet, and small-town living.

“NOT” says the temporary six in control that given their way they will tax us out and mess up even worse than the current School Board.

Way to go, big shots – including you “Look@Yourselves.”
